Pittsburgh Detox & Residential ProgramPittsburgh Detox & Residential Program Review

The Pittsburgh Detox & Residential Program is operated by Pyramid Healthcare, which started out in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1999, eventually spreading out across the state with multiple treatment facilities. The no-frills program offers non-hospital residential care with a dual diagnosis component in a neighborhood on Pittsburgh’s east side. Following the 12 steps, it introduces clients to therapy, meetings and spirituality as they move through their 28-day stay.

Accommodations and Food

Residents spend most of their time in the 58-bed facility in one large, brick building. Modest bedrooms featuring twin-sized beds, white linens and small windows are shared between two clients. Therapy rooms and the dining room are down the hall from the living quarters. A common room has a television that can be watched during free time, but the couches are similar to those you would find in a doctor’s waiting room. Comfort is not a priority in this program.

For exercise, clients have access to a small weight room that can be used in the mornings. Short walks can be taken around the building and cigarettes can be smoked in the designated outdoor areas. Most of the client’s time is spent inside the facility.

Three meals a day are prepared on-site and served buffet style. Typical options include soups, sandwiches, fried chicken, meatballs, macaroni and cheese, pasta and pizza. Special dietary requests can usually be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

From psychiatrists to counselors to therapists to nurses, residents are well taken care of during their 28-day stay. On-site, medically monitored detox is available, typically lasting five days and costing $500 per day. Upon admission, each client is assigned a case manager to oversee an individualized treatment plan. From there, they begin a rigorous schedule of group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy and 12-step meetings. Group topics include relapse prevention, anger management, life skills, processing and trauma. Clients meet for one-on-one counseling once a week and can invite family members into these sessions if they choose.

Daily on-site AA/NA meetings are a major part of the treatment. Attendance is mandatory although clients are not required to begin working the steps. Educational lectures provide clients with an opportunity to understand the history of AA/NA as well as a more in-depth look at the steps.

In Summary

This basic, 28-day program offers 12 step-based treatment in a safe environment. Those looking for exciting extras will not find them here. However, those who want a bed to sleep in, a place to detox and a support team in the Pittsburgh area will find what they need here.
