McHenry IllinoisThe Basics

Founded in 1958 by a mother who wanted a better educational facility for her daughter with developmental disabilities, Pioneer Center for Human Services has since become a network of behavioral and mental health services, homeless outreach and more to the McHenry, Illinois community. With a special focus on mental health disorders, PCHS also treats adult men, women and adolescents struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders with both outpatient and transitional living services.

Treatment and Staff

PCHS’ outpatient program is well rounded using holistic and evidence-based practices. PCHS gives clients individualized treatment plans developed by an assigned counselor after an initial assessment and evaluation. The plan for recovery details how often and for how long the individual attends one-on-one and group therapy and whether or not they should move on to transitional living upon completion of the outpatient track.

Treatment typically entails at least two weekly groups and a minimum of two individual sessions per month. Treatment for co-occurring disorders is available with medication management support from a staff psychiatrist as an adjunct service. Holistic mental health services include nutrition planning, yoga and mindfulness techniques. All sessions use CBT and psychosocial methods and does not include the 12-steps. Instead, PCHS treatment is built on the foundation of six “principles of wellness”—hope, personal responsibility, support, education, self-advocacy and spirituality.

The staff at PCHS consists of MFTs, CADCs and LPCs.

Extras

In addition to their outpatient services, PCHS also offers a wide range of behavioral and mental health services including transitional living for those clients who have completed the outpatient program and want structured living before complete independence.

Other services and programs include traumatic brain injury recovery support, homeless services, counseling and developmental disabilities services. Couple and family therapy are also available if determined necessary by the counselor.

In Summary

PCHS’ outpatient substance abuse treatment program uses a traditional therapy model with evidence-based practices. Clients who wish to establish a recovery community or to incorporate the 12-steps should be prepared to do so on their own. However, PCHS’ holistic approach that includes nutrition and mindfulness practices in addition to co-occurring disorder support makes this comprehensive recovery program a solid choice.
