Founded in 1997, Pinney Davenport Nutrition is an outpatient-based behavioral health clinic specializing in the treatment of eating disorders. Based out of Washington DC, all treatment plans are individualized and mainly focus on teaching participants to have a healthier relationship with their bodies and food through nutritional therapy. Men, women, adults and adolescents are welcome to attend with support for anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, ARFID and related issues.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all participants must go through an initial screening and assessment process to help the staff members determine their needs. As an outpatient program, on-site detox and stabilization services are not available. Once accepted into treatment, all clients work with a team of registered dietitians to develop healthy eating plans.
Though the specifics of each program may vary, all programs include medical oversight and meal support groups which include exposure therapy, portion control and mindful eating training. In addition to the individual and group therapy modalities, the organization also includes family-based counseling services as necessary to help loved ones stay involved in the recovery process. Unlike more thorough psychiatric and medical treatment programs, these programs typically don’t include dual diagnosis support, 12-step involvement or evidence-based psychotherapy. Instead, most are aimed at helping individuals who are already relatively stable to eat healthier and develop a more balanced attitude towards their food intake.
The staff at Pinney Davenport Nutrition consists of many Master’s and PhD-level LDs and RDNs.
Programs are also available simply for clients looking to lose weight in a healthy way or who are looking to improve their knowledge of diet and nutrition. Those who complete one of the programs above can also work with staff members to develop aftercare and discharge plans. Anyone in need of referrals to more intensive psychiatric or medical services can also get them upon request.
All told, Pinney Davenport Nutrition offers individualized programs for clients struggling with eating disorders and does essentially what its name suggests. Though it doesn’t offer much in the way of dual diagnosis support or evidence-based psychotherapy, it does offer individualized meal planning services and nutrition education from a certified team of dietitians and nutritionists who specialize in caring for people with eating disorders. Though the cost of treatment varies depending on each client and their number of sessions, Pinney Davenport Nutrition remains a worthwhile option for those who are farther along in their recovery.
