The Basics
For over 10 years, Delaware Valley Medical has been providing outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts in Pennsauken, New Jersey. Pennsauken is located just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Currently, Delaware Valley offers treatment plans using methadone.
Delaware Valley Medical is a member of the Pinnacle provider network, which operates a number of outpatient and residential facilities throughout Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, Ohio, Minnesota and Michigan.
Treatment and Staff
After clients are assessed, they receive a treatment plan that includes individual therapy in addition to their dosing schedule. Most clients have one-on-one sessions once a week during their first month of treatment and then step down to bi-weekly, monthly and then quarterly sessions.
Clients must attend an orientation session as soon as they’re admitted to the program which addresses HIV prevention and the clinic’s policies and procedures. Most treatment plans also suggest that clients attend group therapy in the initial phases of treatment. Groups use CBT and other evidence-based modalities to address early recovery issues, handling triggers, anger management and relapse prevention. Gender-specific groups are available for men and women, as well. After clients have completed 90 days of treatment, they can begin applying for take-home doses of methadone.
The treatment team at Delaware Valley includes CADCs, CADC-Is and physicians. Counselors also help clients locate peer support meetings such as Methadone Anonymous if they think it may be helpful. The clinic also works with nearby mental health facilities and provides referrals for those needing dual diagnosis support.
Delaware Valley hopes that clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering, if they desire. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.

Delaware Valley also offers a family group for support and recovery education to help provide a network of informed loved ones who can help sustain lasting sobriety.
