PAMHThe Basics

Founded in 2009, Physician Alliance for Mental Health offers a wide range of substance abuse and mental health services for adults and adolescents in Wilmington, North Carolina. This facility specializes in treating co-occurring disorders, providing clients with high-quality psychiatric care. Its primary services are an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and the standard outpatient track, though clinical assessments and psychiatric evaluations are also available.

Treatment and Staff

Before intake, each client undergoes a clinical evaluation to determine which level of care they need. Psychiatric and psychological evaluations are also available to determine whether therapy for mental health issues is also necessary. Outpatient group sizes range from 10 to 15 clients at a time, keeping things small and intimate. While detox is not available, PAMH can make referrals to outside facilities when necessary.

At PAMH, treatment focuses on teaching clients to become independent and deal with their problems in healthier ways. There is an emphasis on life skills, communication and integration into the community.

The adult IOP meets at least three times a week for three hours at a time, with no more than two consecutive days between treatment (though scheduling is somewhat flexible). Treatment includes individual, group and family therapy, relapse prevention, crisis contingency planning, therapy for co-occurring disorders (sometimes with a psychiatrist) and 12-step work.

Clients participate in at least one individual session per week, though more can be added on a case-by-case basis. Twelve-step philosophy and the disease model of addiction are discussed in groups throughout treatment. Clients are not required, but are encouraged, to attend outside AA/NA meetings.

As clients progress through IOP, they have the option to step down into a less intensive schedule, which may be only one to two days of treatment a week. The structure is similar to IOP, with a mixture of group and individual therapy.

For adolescents struggling with mental health or addiction issues, individual therapy, group therapy and psychiatric support are available. Groups usually focus on life skills, relapse prevention, communication and self-esteem. Individual sessions are conducted with a social worker and are usually one hour in length. In more severe cases, staff travel to do therapy with clients in the comfort of the client’s own home.

The staff at PAMH includes psychiatrists, MDs, CSWs and LPNs.

Extras

PAMH offers a psychosocial rehabilitation service, designed to help adults with psychiatric issues function more easily in daily life. This program focuses on life skills and independent living. PAMH also has a jail diversion program that can help negotiate an early release for prospective clients with a treatment plan.

In Summary

Physician Alliance for Mental Health uses a person-centered approach to tackling dual diagnosis issues of adults and adolescents. By focusing on life skills and independent living, clients gain self-esteem and stability in recovery. Overall, PAMH offers the essentials for recovery with a strong medical support staff.
