Throughout the years, Phoenix House has expanded to become one of the country’s largest non-profit substance abuse and addiction treatment providers with over 120 programs in 10 states. It began in 1967, when six heroin addicts who met in a detox unit at a Manhattan hospital were worried about their newly found recovery. They knew they were not sound enough to re-enter society. Addiction professionals and Dr. Mitchell Rosenthal, a psychiatrist, came to their rescue, and opened the first Phoenix House in New York City. Besides providing addiction treatment to financially-challenged clientele, Phoenix House helps those with co-occurring disorders. It uses the Therapeutic Community (TC) model more so than the more traditional 12-step approach, however, Phoenix House believes that there is no one-size-fits-all path to recovery.

Located in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Phoenix House Transitional Support Services (TSS), formerly known as Arbor House, offers short-term, highly-structure residential care and case management to men. All clients have completed detox and are in transition to a longer-term inpatient facility. TSS helps place clients in a state-funded residential program that is appropriate to their needs.

Accommodations and Food

TSS can accommodate up to 27 men inside a quaint, brick townhouse with a yard. Residents stay in dorm-style rooms with bunk or twin beds, dressers and lamps. Smoking is permitted in designated areas. All residents are required to participate in weekly house meetings and are provided with three daily meals and snacks.

Treatment and Staff

TSS accepts men who have completed detox and those currently undergoing Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). Treatment length is 30 days.

Upon admittance, clients undergo a medical and psychiatric assessment to make sure they are emotionally stable enough to enter the facility. Clients are then assigned case managers who conduct comprehensive psychosocial histories. This process takes about two or three days.

Case managers provide clinical evaluations and help clients develop individualized treatment plans, as well as act as liaisons to help get them into an appropriate program. TSS also monitors clients to see if there are any indications of co-occurring disorders that did not surface during detox.

Treatment evidence-based modalities are used. Treatment includes psycho-educational classes, and individual therapy. The class topics include substance addiction and its effect on the brain, relapse prevention, 12-step principles and life skills. Residents also attend 12-step meetings.

Staff includes a residential manager, nurse practitioners, case managers and licensed counselors.

Extras

Phoenix House TSS collaborates with the local YMCA, which allows residents to experience the healing benefits of exercise. Clients also have the option of volunteering at the local food pantry on a weekly basis.

Other services include assistance with obtaining drivers licenses or state-issued IDs, getting copies of birth certificates and acquiring social service benefits.

In Summary

Phoenix House Transitional Support Services helps clients find their footing after they have left detox. Thanks to comprehensive case managers, clients are able to maintain their recovery in a safe environment while they wait to be placed into residential treatment. For those in need of transitional care in the western Massachusetts area, Phoenix House Transitional Support Services is an excellent resource.
