Phoenix HouseThe Basics

Phoenix House RISE offers transitional housing in Vermont for men, ages 18 and above, coming out of a residential or an Intensive Outpatient (IOP) facility. The program has four locations—Barre, Burlington, Brattleboro and Bellows Falls. In addition to treating men, a separate women’s facility in Brattleboro is also available. Phoenix House was established in 1967 and provides step-down services and holistic treatment for those who are seeking extra support.

Accommodations and Amenities

The four sober living facilities in the RISE men’s program are all modest homes in quiet, residential neighborhoods. Every home has two or three bedrooms that accommodate six to eight clients at a time, sharing bedrooms and bathrooms. The men also share common areas like kitchens, dining rooms and living rooms. Basic toiletries and bedding are provided in the homes. Food is not provided.

Throughout the Phoenix House programs, recreational activities are a large part of treatment. Though each facility differs as far as what is available in the area, activities include hiking, biking, movie nights, community outreach, cooking classes, gardening and yoga. On occasion, the facilities that are close to each other may have softball games, sober dances or cookouts together.

Vocational training classes are also offered such as the Phoenix House cosmetology program and resume building. Additionally, clients may work or attend school while living at the facilities.

Rules and Regulations

During an initial assessment with a Phoenix House intake counselor, the amount of time to be spent in the facility is discussed. The time spent in a home varies between three to 24 months, depending on the resident’s progress. It is common for clients newer to sobriety to take part in an outpatient program.

If the client does not attend an outpatient program, daily 12-step meetings and weekly individual therapy are required. There is a curfew of 9 pm on weekdays and 10:30 pm on weekends and the house managers conduct frequent urine tests. After 30 to 90 days, clients can apply for a 24-hour pass to visit family. These passes can be used once a month. Clients are encouraged to seek employment or education, but it is not required. Smoking is permitted outside of the house.

If an outpatient program is recommended, it can be in the form of an IOP for up to six hours a day or a less intensive outpatient option. These programs are run by Phoenix House and held at a separate facility nearby. In either case, the therapist and client develop an individualized plan that consists of group and individual therapy sessions, relapse prevention classes and education about the disease of addiction. The therapy methods can vary depending on what is most effective for each individual. Evidence-based methods like CBT, DBT or trauma-based EMDR are often used with clients and other options include art or music therapy.

Extras

Family participation in Phoenix House programs is highly encouraged. Depending on the client’s level of comfort, a family program can be integrated into therapy sessions. Prior to a client being released from the home, an aftercare program is developed that includes support meetings and follow-up sessions with counselors.

In Summary

Phoenix House RISE can be as intensive or low-key as the client desires as this program emphasizes individualized treatment. The evidence-based system provides clients with many options for treatment and, while some sober living homes require that clients seek employment or education, this program is more flexible. For those who want to truly focus on 12-step meetings and therapy as they transition back into everyday life, these Vermont sober living facilities are great options.
