The CARF-accredited not-for-profit organization Phoenix House Outpatient and Prevention was founded in 1995 in Houston, Texas.  It provides outpatient substance abuse treatment to adult men and women in the Greater Houston area.

Treatment and Staff

Phoenix House operates an outpatient program, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for clients stepping down from residential care. Treatment consists of group and individual counseling but the exact length and intensity of the program is based on counselor assessment. Groups generally meet four to five times a week in the PHP, two to three times a week in the IOP and once to twice a week in regular outpatient. Group sizes are generally kept small, ranging from eight to 15 clients.

Counselors use evidence-based treatment techniques including CBT, trauma-informed care, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and relapse prevention. Phoenix House also uses art therapy, meditation and recreational activity.

The organization offers special groups for adolescents in the afternoon and evening to accommodate academic schedules—with the option of attending the IOP or the more traditional program with a lesser time commitment. Program consists of psychoeducational groups, case management, drug testing and life skills education. Adolescent clients also regularly participate in recreational activities that teach them how to have fun in sobriety.

Although Phoenix House is not 12-step based, counselors do make clients aware of AA and NA and strongly recommend they attend meetings while in treatment.

Phoenix House is equipped to treat clients with a dual diagnosis and all who qualify will be referred to a staff psychiatrist, psychologists or LMHCs.

The substance abuse counselors are LCDCs and LCSWs.

Extras

Phoenix House offers family sessions upon client’s consent.

If needed, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is available for clients with opiate addictions. This type of treatment utilizes buprenorphine and facilitates medication management.

In Summary

Phoenix House Outpatient and Prevention provides affordable treatment at different intensity levels. An array of evidence-based treatment methods in conjunction with recreational and alternative therapies, along with dual diagnosis support, make this facility an extremely comprehensive outpatient choice.
