Since 1967, Phoenix House has grown to become a non-profit institution that provides an array of services to financially challenged clientele suffering from alcoholism, drug addiction and co-occurring disorders. Thanks to a small group of heroin addicts, along with the help of psychiatrist Dr. Mitch Rosenthal, Phoenix House is now one of the the nation’s leading providers of alcohol and drug abuse treatment.

The Phoenix House Exeter Center offers comprehensive residential treatment for men. It includes the Walsh Unit and the McKenna Unit, which provide Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to men and women.

Accommodations and Food

The Exeter Center is a one-story brick building with a pristine lawn, a paved pathway, street lamps, an American flag flying from a pole and an array of pine and elm trees. Its residential program for men has a 20-bed capacity. The Walsh and McKenna detox units can accommodate a total of 40 men and women.

Residents are served three meals a day, along with healthy snacks.

Treatment and Staff

The length of stay for detox is between four and seven days, but an extended care option is available for clients who are not quite ready to leave. MAT is prescribed and clients are monitored around the clock.

During detox, clients participate in individual and group therapy and attend on-site 12-step meetings. During one-on-one sessions, counselors work closely with clients to establish treatment plans that often includes primary care referrals.

Treatment tracks for the men’s program include 30-day, 90-day and 180-day stays. These are determined by clients’ individual progress, needs and personal assessments. The program employs evidence-based modalities including CBT and trauma-informed care. Weekly treatment implements individual and group therapy, with topics such as relapse prevention, life skills, trauma and substance abuse education. Residents are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings, as well as other recovery support groups.

Dual diagnosis support is provided and clients with co-occurring disorders meet with psychiatrists to receive medication assessments.

Extras

The family program helps loved ones deal with dysfunctional family dynamics, which are often present when a relative suffers from addiction. Families participate in groups that teach them how to identify triggers that could cause the addict to relapse. Topics include healthy boundaries and co-dependency.

The Exeter Center has a fully equipped gym, which allows residents the chance to participate in healthy recreational activities.

Aftercare planning is provided on an individual basis. Clients receive recovery support group recommendations as well as sober living and transitional care referrals.

In Summary

Phoenix House Exeter Center offers comprehensive detox and treatment services, with the option for clients to receive extended care. This often directs them towards getting residential treatment, where men can are transferred to Exeter Center and women are given referrals to outside programs. In all, Exeter Center is a great program that saves lives.
