phoenix-counseling-and-crisisThe Basics

For over 10 years, Phoenix Counseling and Crisis Centers, Inc. has been providing substance abuse and mental health treatment to the residents of Cleveland, Lincoln and Gaston counties in eastern North Carolina. Phoenix’s range of services include outpatient treatment, detox and referrals to residential treatment. It also operates Gaylain’s House, a half-way house for women.

Phoenix Counseling’s mission is to “advocate, encourage, and exemplify the barrier-free delivery of responsive, innovative community-based behavioral health treatment services in an environment of dignity and respect.”

Treatment and Staff

Outpatient treatment is available at locations in all three counties. Detox (usually three to five days) and crisis stabilization units are available at separate locations in Shelby, Gastonia and Lincoln. After an assessment, clients are placed in the Comprehensive Outpatient Program or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

The Comprehensive track provides a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) level of care. Clients attend group therapy for four-and-a-half hours a day, five days a week. IOP clients attend three to five days a week, for three hours. Most clients have individual therapy at least once a week. The duration of treatment is progress-based, depending on the needs of the client, but an average treatment plan is 12 weeks long. Clients can step down from the Comprehensive track to the IOP as they progress.

Phoenix’s treatment team includes LPCs and LCSWs, many of whom are dually-certified LCAS addiction counselors. Therapy is based on the Matrix Model and uses trauma-informed care and the Seeking Safety curriculum. Groups are offered for dual-diagnosis support, parenting and anger management. There are also gender-specific groups for women and an opiate replacement support group. Phoenix also has two programs for adolescents struggling with substance abuse, U-Turn (an early intervention program) and Seven Challenges.

Clients are also encouraged to attend support meetings while in treatment, and Phoenix employs a peer support counselor who helps clients locate appropriate meetings, including AA/NA and Celebrate Recovery.

Phoenix is highly experienced treating co-occurring mental health and substance abuse diagnoses. However, if clients’ mental health conditions escalate, they may be referred to nearby hospitals and mental health clinics. The Shelby location often works with Monarch, a mental health clinic located in its building.

Extras

Phoenix offers Domestic Violence intervention groups and clients can also bring loved ones to their individual therapy sessions for family counseling. Case management and Spanish services are also available. For aftercare, clients may attend a weekly relapse prevention group.

In Summary

Phoenix Counseling and Crisis Centers, Inc. offers several levels of substance abuse treatment, as well as extensive referral services to mental health and supportive services. Its treatment team is highly experienced in dual-diagnosis support, family systems and crisis intervention, enabling them to help clients access resources and build coping skills as they take their first steps in recovery.
