Penn Presbyterian Medical Center Review

The Addictions Assessment Center at Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania offers residential and outpatient treatment for co-occurring disorders to adult men and women. Located in the University City section of West Philadelphia, Penn Presbyterian is part of the Perelman School of Medicine

Accommodations and Food

For inpatient recovery, Penn Presbyterian offers two options, Wright Four and Wright Five. Wright Four is an 18-bed facility for residential treatment and detox. Wright Five is a 22-bed short-term psychiatric unit accepting all levels of diagnosis, specializing in the treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance abuse problems. Lengths of stay in the two units vary depending on the specific needs of each individual and their ability to pay. Rooms at both Wright Four and Five are private, with fully-furnished modern interiors and natural light.

Meals are served in the hospital cafeteria and vary among popular meals such as sandwiches, fish and chicken dishes along with pasta and rice entrees, salads, soups and breads.

Treatment and Staff

The Assessment Center is the point of intake for those seeking recovery and mental health assistance at Penn Presbyterian. Licensed nurses and addiction counselors conduct all assessments. Applicants provide personal information, substance abuse and treatment history and are given an examination to determine physical, emotional and mental health.

Treatment uses a daily regimen of individual and group counseling, psychoeducational sessions, reality therapy, CBT, life skills education for coping skills and stress management, family support and participation in 12-step meetings (AA, NA or CA). Individualized aftercare planning begins during residency, with a case manager to make referrals for educational or vocational training and placement. Transfers to transitional housing and follow-ups within the criminal justice system are also available.

The outpatient program at Penn offers group psychotherapy, group psychoeducation and individual sessions with the same modalities as mentioned above. Penn Presbyterian also offers an Addiction Treatment Alumni program for continuing support.

Penn Presbyterian’s staff includes physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, mental health clinicians, social workers and CADCs. The staff-to-client ratio varying from one-to-four to one-to-12, depending on the number of participants in each session.

Extras

University of Pennsylvania nurse-in-training medical students work with staff, supporting and augmenting treatment by monitoring clients withdrawal symptoms, helping with medication management, auditing group and one-to-one sessions and offering complimentary care. They also teach residents about healthy lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation, daily exercise and dietary choices.

In Summary

Penn Presbyterian Medical Center offers inpatient and outpatient services for mental health and addiction treatment in a hospital setting. While this facility is more expensive than average, the price seems justified when considering the private rooms, professional staff and Penn Presbyterian’s ranking as one of the top hospitals in the nation.
