Penn North RecoveryThe Basics

Penn North Recovery is located in Baltimore at the intersection of Pennsylvania and North Avenues, on the Pennsylvania Corridor. Penn North opened its doors in 1993 and provides outpatient substance abuse treatment and job skills training to over 7,000 residents each year, many of whom are attempting to overcome the challenges of intergenerational substance abuse.

Penn North is notable for its successful Acudetox component of treatment, which uses acupuncture to help clients learn self-awareness and drug-free pain management. Penn North also offers community services for children and supportive housing services.

Treatment and Staff

Clients usually attend outpatient treatment, which is offered at the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level, for six to 12 months. Clients attend group therapy and psychoeducation classes Monday through Thursday and then visit the center on Fridays for men’s and women’s ‘rap groups,’ where they can discuss current issues in their lives and offer peer support.

Groups are led by CAC addiction counselors and peer recovery coaches. Master’s-level therapists are also available to provide individual and family therapy as-needed. Groups included Early Recovery, Anger Management, Chronic Relapse and Building Self-Esteem.

Clients must take two urinalysis tests each week and are asked to attend at least two AA/NA meetings.

As part of their treatment plan, clients must also attend several Acudetox sessions each week. In these 45-minute sessions, acupuncturists insert five needles in clients’ ears and then support them through reflection and meditation. This process enables clients to build self-awareness and also enables the treatment team to build rapport and trust with clients outside the traditional clinical/educational setting.

Extras

Most clients take advantage of Penn North’s extensive job training program, “Partnership for Growth.” This program teaches “soft skills” such as conversation and interview techniques, as well as how to access vocational training. Clients whose addiction has led to law-breaking can take part in “Clean Sweep,” a program in which clients work on landscape and repair projects that give back to the communities they hurt through their criminal activities.

For aftercare, many clients benefit from attending weekly alumni groups and/or becoming peer counselors at Penn North. Penn North also offers HIV counseling and nutrition and cooking classes.

In Summary

Penn North Recovery provides long-term outpatient treatment at no cost to residents of Penn-North and surrounding neighborhoods, where crime often exceeds ten times the national average. Through its group therapy, Acudetox, Partnership for Change and Clean Sweep programs, Penn North provides multiple contexts in which those in recovery can form new and healthier connections to themselves, their families and their communities.
