Peak Wellness Center WheatlandThe Basics

Peak Wellness Center is a private nonprofit organization whose history reaches back to 1959, when it opened its doors under the name Southeast Wyoming Mental Health Center. Since then, tens of thousands of clients have been treated out of four locations in Wyoming, including a residential facility in Laramie and outpatient services in Cheyenne, Torrington and Wheatland. Peak Wellness Center has made a commitment to offer substance abuse services to all community members, regardless of their ability to pay. As a result, the majority of the over 5,000 clients served last year were low income. The facility in Wheatland, a town of just over 3,000 residents, is about an hour’s drive due north of Cheyenne, the state capital.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Wheatland includes dual diagnosis support and a 16-week Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that combines group therapy four times per week with individual therapy sessions. Initially, each new client must undergo a clinical assessment by a qualified therapist. The staff asks that new clients download and complete the application and health history forms prior to the first visit in order to expedite the process. Detox is not one of the services provided at this facility.

To join group sessions, clients must have at least one individual therapy session per week. The Peak Wellness program uses a CBT approach and emphasizes six key clinical areas including individual therapy, early recovery, relapse prevention, family education, social support and urine testing. Group sessions are kept relatively small, with about six people. Clients are encouraged to participate in the meditation near the end of each session, but may opt out if so desired. Using narrative therapy, therapists cover a wide range of topics, such as sugar cravings and anger management, designed to help clients live in balance while changing their behavior. Clients must also take a Breathalyzer test upon checking in, and are encouraged to participate in 12-step meetings.

On average, there are five Master’s-level therapists and one licensed substance abuse counselor stationed in Platte County. For those in crisis, there are qualified professional counselors on call all day, every day; simply call the main number and someone will be able to help.

Extras

An aftercare program is available for clients who have completed the 16-week IOP, which entitles them to attend one group session per week.

In Summary

Peak Wellness Center is a comprehensive option for people of all incomes. With a trained staff and a long history of serving the community, they are committed to helping people overcome their addictions.
