peaceful spiritPeaceful Spirit Review

Peaceful Spirit, located in Ignacio, Colorado, offers an intensive residential 60-day program and outpatient treatment to both male and female residents of La Plata and Archuleta counties. It is one of the services of Southern Ute Community Action Programs, a large nonprofit on Colorado’s Western Slope that was created by the Southern Ute Indian tribe in 1966. Though most clients receiving treatment through SUCAP are members of the Southern Ute Reservation, non-tribe members may also receive treatment.

Accommodations and Food

Peaceful Spirit is a nine-person facility on the Southern Ute Reservation. There are twin beds in each of the five bedrooms, one of which is reserved for the house manager. Rooms are kept as gender-segregated as possible, though this can depend on the proportion of men to women in residence at any given time.

The house has a TV with cable for clients to use during downtime, though there is no house computer or Wi-Fi access available. The facility is constantly monitored by a house manager, who is on-site at all times. All meals at Peaceful Spirit are prepared by an on-site cook trained to provide nutritionally balanced fare.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Peaceful Spirit consists of CBT in individual therapy sessions that explore the effects of drugs and alcohol and the motivations for substance abuse. There are also group therapy sessions dedicated to working on assertiveness and self esteem, family relationships, trauma, loss and long-term recovery planning. For those coming off of opiates, Suboxone is available.

Personal electronic devices are not permitted while in residence. All belongings brought to the facility are kept under lock and key.

Breakfast and chores are from 6:45 am to 8 am, followed by meditation and exercise from 8 am to 10 am. Group and individual counseling begins at 10 am and lasts until 5 pm. Sessions can range from 45 minutes to two and a half hours each. 12-step meetings are held in the evenings, with some free time after. Lights out is between 10 pm and 10:30 pm.

The staff at Peaceful Spirit consists of 20 certified medical professionals including CADCs, licensed clinicians, alternative medicine practitioners, CSHs and social workers with Master’’s degrees. The on-site staff-to-client ratio is two-to-one.

Extras

Dial-a-Ride and public transportation to and from the nearby towns of Durango and Aztec is available for a fee. Residents can take advantage of yoga sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 am. and wilderness therapy and equine therapy are also offered for no extra fee. Clients can also take part in Native American sweat lodge ceremonies. Youth services and family counseling are available.

In Summary

Peaceful Spirit has a long history with Southern Ute Community Action Programs. Since 1966, it has offered services to men and women struggling with substance abuse, providing an affordable and effective step on the road to recovery.
