Peace River Center Review

With many locations throughout Florida, Peace River Center is an expansive behavioral health organization with 27 locations and 30 different programs for those struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. The private, not-for-profit organization was founded in the 1940s and was originally aimed at offering services only to children though it has since expanded to adults as well. In addition to its outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), the organization also offers acute residential treatment plans as well.

Accommodations and Food

All told, the Peace River Center’s inpatient unit has a total of 20 beds, 10 for adults and 10 for children. The facility itself is essentially clinical with shared rooms featuring twin beds, dressers, storage space and closets. In addition to the bedrooms, the organization also has common areas with TV, therapy rooms and outdoor walking paths.

Throughout their stay, clients are served three healthy meals a day plus snacks.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, all participants go through an intake and assessment process to help staff members determine their needs. Because residential treatment is short-term, these acute stays are typically the detox or stabilization period. Though the length of care may vary, stabilization typically lasts less than 30 days, typically around seven to 14. In addition to medical and psychiatric oversight, clients also attend individual and group therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT and EMDR as necessary. Dual diagnosis support and medication management services are also provided.

Groups cover self-esteem, anger management, emotional processing, trigger identification, relapse prevention and life skills. Though it is often not within the scope of the program, participants may be encouraged to attend outside 12-step meetings and referred to local meetings.

The staff at Peace River Center consists of psychologists, psychiatrists, case managers, LCSWs, LPCs, LMHCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Those who complete an acute stay can continue on to outpatient or IOP as a form of stepped down aftercare. As mentioned, services are available at many locations throughout the state.

Other options include family therapy and parenting classes as well as educational and therapeutic groups for victims of sexual assault. There’s also a crisis hotline clients can call related to those issues. Standalone psychological and medical assessments are also available. Children can participate in sand play therapy and child mental health specialists are also available on-staff.

In Summary

Overall, the Peace River Center is a well-rounded organization with services for adults and children alike. Treatment plans include medical and psychiatric oversight, dual diagnosis support, evidence-based care and additional ancillary services. While the cost and specifics of these programs may vary by insurance and each client’s issues, the Peace River Center’s acute residential program is a strong resource for those in the area.
