The Basics

With a variety of facilities throughout Lakeland, Wauchula and Bartow, Florida, Peace River Center is a behavioral health organization with 27 locations and 30 different programs for clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. Founded in the late 1940s, the organization was initially aimed at providing services only to children before expanding to include treatment for adults. In addition to its inpatient crisis stabilization services, clients can also attend flexible outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) as well.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their care plans. Although detox services are not available, those in need can get referrals to nearby programs. While outpatient plans can be made to suit any schedule, IOP typically meets for three hour sessions at least three days a week.

Separate treatment tracks are offered for mental health and addiction, both of which include individual and group therapy with evidence-based treatment practices like CBT, DBT and EMDR. Because therapy is open to children, adolescents and adults, topics covered in each track may vary by age. Still, commonly covered are issues of self-esteem, anger management, life skills, emotional processing, relapse prevention and trigger identification. Dual diagnosis support is available along with medication management. While 12-step participation is not always required, it may be encouraged in some cases.

The staff at Peace River Center consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, case managers, LCSWs, LPCs, LMHCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Other services include family therapy groups and parenting classes. Educational and therapeutic groups for victims of sexual assault are also offered along with a crisis hotline. Standalone psychological and health assessments are available as well. Younger participants can also attend sand play therapy sessions and child mental health specialists are available on-staff as well. As mentioned, the organization also provides inpatient services when necessary in addition to aftercare plans.

In Summary

Overall, Peace River Center is a broad organization with flexible programs available to clients of all ages. Treatment is evidence-based and includes psychiatric oversight, dual diagnosis support and educational groups, all at many convenient locations throughout the state. Though the cost of these programs may vary by intensity and insurance, Peace River Center remains a good resource for those in the area.
