Paxton HouseThe Basics

With five locations in Tucson, Arizona, Paxton House offers men affordable sober living. While Paxton House welcomes the financially challenged, as well as homeless and criminal justice clients, rent and other program fees must be paid on time. At Paxton House, men are required to work towards a better life by gaining employment or pursuing an education while staying clean and sober.

Accommodations and Amenities

Paxton House houses up to 42 men in five locations throughout the Tucson area. Men share double-occupancy rooms. The furnished residences include common areas such as a kitchen, living room with a Cable TV, dining room and on-site laundry facility. Bedding is provided, but residents must bring their own towels and personal grooming supplies.

Since transportation and food are not included, residents typically obtain bus passes. The facilities are in walking distance of a bus line. They are also provided with a referral from the facility to get food stamps. They typically pool their food stamps into a house fund, with each man giving the resident manager $200 worth to cover his meals for the month. The manager is responsible for planning meals and grocery shopping and residents take turns cooking and cleaning. There are office staff and a resident manager on the premises at each house.

Rules and Regulations

Men must have 30 days of abstinence from drugs and alcohol or have completed a residential treatment program. Those on methadone maintenance are admitted on a case-by-case basis. Length of stay at Paxton House requires a 30-day minimum time commitment.

Weekly requirements include attendance at an in-house meeting, and at two outside recovery support group meetings. SMART Recovery is an acceptable option for those seeking an alternative to the 12-step approach. Those sticking to AA, NA or CA must get sponsors, home groups and work their steps. Random drug and alcohol tests are administered as a measure of compliance. There is a zero-tolerance policy for refusing the test or testing positive. In addition, clients are expected to hold each other accountable. Knowledge of a fellow resident’s drinking or using and not telling staff is cause for immediate dismissal.

For working residents, the curfew is 11 pm from Sundays to Thursday, and there is no set curfew on weekends or days off. Unemployed residents have a 6 pm curfew seven days a week unless they are attending a support group. Residents are expected to wash their own dishes, make their beds and clean the sleeping area. In addition, they are assigned household chores. While smoking is allowed outside, anyone caught smoking inside the house is evicted.

Extras

Upon a successful discharge, men are provided with rental housing references which can be valuable for those who have spent time in prison or living on the streets. Job search assistance and computer access are also available.

In Summary

Paxton House offers men a basic non-nonsense program and a chance to rebuild their lives. However, for those seeking referrals or ongoing support for co-occurring disorders or for those needing aftercare services, this might not be the right place.
