Patton Sober LivingThe Basics

Patton Sober Living of Richardson, Texas (north of Dallas and east of Addison) was opened in 2013 by owner John Patton, a LCSW and interventionist. The sober living program gives young men ages 18 to 35 a safe place to call home early in recovery. The home provides structure and a sense of accountability, and includes regular 12-step meetings, education and fun, sober activities.

Accommodations and Amenities

The three homes accommodate eight to 10 clients each in a lovely, tree-lined residential neighborhood. The bedrooms are either double or triple occupancy, with a dressers for each client. Each room has its own bathroom complete with a tub and shower. A large flat screen TV, pool table and fireplace can be found in the shared living room. The large kitchen area has new appliances and opens up to a dining room. A spacious backyard includes a pool and shady grass area. For those who need internet access, wifi is provided and a house computer is available.

All food and transportation to meetings and appointments are included in the client’s monthly fee. After the client completes the fifth step, they are allowed to have access to their personal vehicles.

Rules and Regulations

Patton Sober Living truly believes in the 12-step model and requires clients to attend a minimum of four meetings per week and provide proof of attendance to the house manager. Within a couple weeks of moving into the house, clients are responsible for securing a sponsor within the community and working the steps. Before entering the program, the staff prefers to get a verbal agreement that each client will make at least a 90 day commitment. However, this is not mandatory.

There are three group meetings held at the house per week and it is mandatory for clients to attend. The Wednesday meeting is lead by the facilities founder, John Patton. House meetings are provided as a way for clients to freely express any concerns regarding residents or issues within the program, as well as a check in with the house managers and staff.

The men in the program are expected to be respectful of the house and maintain it. This means keeping the bedrooms tidy, cleaning common areas, doing personal laundry and cooking. Taking part in giving back to the community and public service hours are also to be completed while in the house.

There is one individual counseling session provided per week for each client, which is held off-site at the Richland Oaks Counseling Center. Additionally, clients are expected to either work for a minimum of 25 hours per week or attend school. If an individual is interested in obtaining a degree, staff works with them to help start the enrollment process to the local college.

The staff at Patton Sober Living includes several LCSWs, LCDCs, program directors and house managers.

Extras

Visitors are allowed at the facility when approved by house manager; however there can’t be anything romantic happening in the house. Participation in church services is encouraged by staff but not mandatory.

There are frequent sober outings scheduled such baseball and football games, movie nights, barbecues, lake trips and other recreational activities. When it comes to working out, each client receives a membership to LA Fitness, which is within walking distance of the residence. Clients are required to work out at least three times a week but may go more frequently if their schedule permits.

In Summary

Patton Sober Living believes that each client has the ability to overcome their addiction. The program is very strict and doesn’t allow for a lot of downtime, which at first can be difficult for some clients to get used to. However, by providing such structure, client’s can improve their self esteem, learn new skills and enjoy a fun, sober life.
