Pathways Treatment CenterPathways Treatment Center Review

Pathways Treatment Center is a 12-step based rehab in Lynchburg, Virginia, a mid-sized city with views of the famous Blue Ridge Mountains just two hours west of the state capital, Richmond. Opened in 1984, Pathways is a lower mid-range priced rehab that has served over 5,100 clients.

Accommodations and Food

The 24 clients allowed here at once tend to be fairly evenly split down the middle by gender. Treatment and housing is in the same place: a brick, white pillared three-story building with a deck and a green lawn next door to the Virginia Baptist Hospital. Clients each have one roommate in carpeted rooms outfitted with chests of drawers, mirrors, desks and padded chairs as well as the two twin-sized beds. There’s also a media center with a desktop computer.

The food is cafeteria-style and served by the Virginia Baptist Hospital next door. It’s not gourmet but fills clients up with options like deli sandwiches, macaroni, spaghetti and hamburgers.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Pathways is simply the 12 steps, classes on addiction and CBT. It is a 30-day program that consists of three individual sessions a week and multiple group sessions throughout the day. Clients go to both off-site and on-site AA and NA meetings they’re required to attend but finding sponsors is just encouraged and not required. Detox is available at the hospital next door for three to five days and dual diagnosis support is also available. There are 35 staff members who are a mix of highly credentialed and peer counselors. Those on the daytime shift are all Master’s-level and there are also two PhDs and a psychiatrist.

A typical day at Pathways means waking up at 7 for 7:45 am breakfast followed by meditation at 8:45 am. Throughout the day, clients attend educational courses covering addiction as well as relapse prevention groups. After that is a peer review group where residents discuss one another’s recovery until lunch at noon. After lunch is group therapy, which goes until 2:30 pm and is followed by a reading group until 3:15 pm. From 3:30 to 4:30 pm, there’s another class followed by a community meeting. After that is free time, which goes until dinner at 6 pm and is followed by more free time until 7:30. There are either off- and on-site AA or NA meetings until 9:30 pm and then free time until lights out at 11:15 pm.

Clients can watch TV during free time and cell phones are allowed for one hour a day. Computers are not permitted but residents may use the one in the media room.

Extras

The family program at Pathways takes place once a month on Saturdays and includes classes on addiction as well as group and individual therapy with family members (visitors hours are on Sundays from 2 to 5 pm). There’s also an on-site gym that contains weights and a treadmill (exercise is not built into the program and is not mandatory but is encouraged). Weekend extracurricular activities include bowling and going to the movies.

In Summary

Pathways is a good place to get sober that’ not outrageously expensive. For those looking for a 12-step-centered rehab in Virginia, this could be the spot.
