pathways-sober-livingThe Basics

Founded by CEO Timothy Evans in 2009, Pathways Sober Living is a group of four gender-specific, sober living homes in Azusa and Pomona, California. Its mission is to provide 12-step based sober living to recovering alcoholics and addicts.

Accommodations and Amenities

The original Pathways house is today brown two-story with a big front yard, while Pathways II is ranch-style. Pathways III sports a deep porch, and low-pitched roof that is reminiscent of Craftsman bungalow architecture. Pathways IV is a white Mediterranean-style home with a red tile roof, and a a front yard which also has a fountain, trees and a pristine lawn.

Pathways II accommodates women and single moms with a child, while the other three houses are male-only. All of the houses include six bedrooms, between two and three bathrooms, a BBQ, Cable TV, free Internet, a home telephone and laundry facilities. The women’s house has a children’s playroom and a second living room. At Pathways Sober Living, there are 18 women, and approximately 60 to 72 men, including three live-in house managers house managers per house. There are four men per bedroom, which is furnished with two bunk beds, dressers and shared closet space.

Food is provided at all the houses. Residents rotate and cook dinners for the entire household in fully equipped kitchens. The art of cooking for the entire house is designed to promote accountability. A typical breakfast includes cereal or waffles and sausage, and on Sundays, there is bacon and eggs. Lunch includes sandwiches made from a diverse choice of meats including salami and ham. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are also offered. For dinner, entrees include hot dogs, hamburger patties, frozen burritos and pasta. There is ample coffee available on the premises. Smoking is permitted in designated outside areas.

Rules and Regulations

At Pathways Sober Living, clients are admitted on a case-by-case basis, and newcomers are welcome, as long as they have undergone detox. Pathways is deeply entrenched in the 12-steps and all residents, regardless of whether they are employed or not, must attend 10 weekly AA/NA meetings. During the first 14 days, clients undergo a blackout period, which includes a 10 pm curfew from Sundays to Thursdays, and an 11 pm curfew on Fridays and Saturdays.

After the black out period, clients receive a personalized assessment with staff. Their needs are reviewed and short-term goals are created. Clients needing outpatient treatment enroll at a drug rehab, while those seeking to get a job or desiring to further their academic education are encouraged to do so. Should a client be dependent on his family for rent money, he or she is encouraged to find work and become self-sufficient. The curfew is extended to 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays.

A typical daily schedule includes getting up at six am, heading out to a morning 12-step meeting (transportation is provided) and coming home for breakfast, before participating in the day’s events, which vary per client. Other requirements include getting a sponsor, performing household chores and attending house meetings.

At Pathways, residents are subject to random drug and alcohol screenings. Individuals testing positive are subject to immediate eviction. The women’s house has a 30-day cost of $500 (for single women) and $550 for a woman with one child. The men’s houses have a 30-day cost of $700.

Extras

Pathways III has a weekly Big Book meetings on the premises. Pathways Sober Living is also a member of the Sober Living Network.

In Summary

Pathways Sober Living provides an intensive 12-step oriented ambience for those new to recovery. Because food is included in the cost, as well as personalized case management services this is a great deal. The only drawback is that the facility is usually full. Those who are interested are encouraged to get on a waiting list. Live-in managers cares about the welfare of their clients but also expect them to follow protocol. For those seeking to immerse themselves in the 12-steps as well as a highly structured way of life, this is a perfect match.
