Located the Ventura County city of Oxnard, California, Pathways Management opened in 2011 and today accommodates up to 10 men in its sober living home. The house was founded by Patrick M., who is still the administrator and oversees a staff largely made up of men who are also in long-term recovery from alcohol or drugs. It is close to a public bus line but also provides transportation to help residents get to 12-step meetings, court dates and other recovery-related appointments. Every resident is expected to respect a curfew and submit to random urinalysis and Breathalyzer tests.

Accommodations and Amenities

In the five-bedroom house with its large backyard, residents share double-occupancy rooms that are furnished with beds and adequate storage for clothing and possessions. The three-and-a-half bathrooms are shared by residents. There’s a large kitchen, which is fully stocked with everything needed to prepare meals. Dinner is a community affair for residents and staff in the house’s comfortable dining room. The living room has a large-screen TV.

Other than clothing, Pathways provides everything residents need including linens and towels. Amenities include a washer, dryer and ample parking for residents who bring their cars.

Rules and Regulations

Most residents stay at Pathways for about 90 days. The house rules are built on a foundation of respect for others and following the 12 steps. Each resident must remain 100 percent alcohol and drug-free, stick to curfews and submit to random urinalysis, Breathalyzer and drug screenings.

When a resident is admitted, he is required to find a sponsor who will support his recovery and report his progress to Pathways house management. Residents must attend a total of five in-house and off-site AA meetings a week.

Residents apply for, and generally receive, what’s called General Relief— typically about $300 a month—that goes toward rent and groceries. Those who work at least four days a month can earn the balance of rent.

Rules for daily life are straightforward and non-negotiable. If a resident doesn’t make his bed for several days, he forfeits his weekend activities. If he threatens violence or commits an act of violence, house staff and residents meet to discuss the behavior, which could result in discharge from the house.

Each resident is required to sign himself in and out of the house whenever he leaves and returns. A house manager on the premises 24/7 monitors compliance. Residents who are not employed are required to attend an AA meeting outside the house during the lunch hour.

Curfew for each resident is 11 pm on weekdays and 1 am on weekends. Residents who have visitors must ensure that they respect house rules such as not using alcohol or drugs on the premises.

Extras

The house does not have detox services, so residents should be clean when they check in. If they are in the process of detox, they are expected to get through the worst of it without their symptoms being medically managed.

In Summary

Pathways offers its residents, many of whom have come from institutional settings such as jails or prisons, a structured environment with rules and regulations and strict criteria for behavior. With a philosophy of respect between residents and strict adherence to the 12 steps, Pathways is a good sober living option for men living in the Oxnard area.
