Pathways House Review
With capacity for only five clients and a variety of holistic services, Pathways House aims to provide individualized attention and comfort throughout treatment. This UK facility located in historic Canterbury is only 60 miles southeast of London. Clients who attend the program receive complimentary detox in addition to a plethora of group therapy work. And while some rehabs focus solely on substance abuse, Pathways House also helps clients heal from gambling addiction and eating disorders.
Accommodations and Food
Pathways House emphasizes comfort and relaxation during treatment. The program occupies a cozy house, creating a home away from home feeling and offers modestly-decorated private rooms with full-sized beds for everyone. The house also features a fully stocked kitchen, a dining room and a lounge room with a flat screen TV. During the day, clients are transported to the main facility, where all therapy takes place.
Residents are responsible for breakfast and lunch, while staff members are in charge of preparing tasty, house dinners. After clients submit their grocery requests., a staff member brings all of the items into the house. The attitude here is “help yourself,” as the program encourages clients to feel independent and comfortable. For those wishing to get outside of the home for meals, off-site restaurant outings occur twice a week.
While the home does not include a weight room or a place to work out, clients can go on supervised walks. Smoking is allowed on the property at any time, as long as a group is not in session.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment times vary depending on the individual, ranging from a five-to-10 day detox to 12 weeks of residential care. A medically monitored detox takes place on-site and is included in the cost. During this time, clients have access to a consulting psychiatrist and an on-call nurse. Once this process is completed, clients are assigned a key manager, who meets with them once a week, to oversee their progress.
The treatment offered through this facility is based on the 12 steps, with a major focus on group therapy. One-on-one therapy sessions can be set up on a case-to-case basis. Groups are run by two counselors, on topics such as trauma, art therapy, relapse prevention, anger management, grief and family dynamics. Residents can also attend off-site AA/NA three times week.
While a family program is not offered, family members can set up times to speak with the client’s key manager.
Extras
Although long days of group work can be exhausting, clients can relax with shiatsu and deep tissue massages, which are included in the monthly cost.
In Summary
With the very small client load, on-site massages and recovery steeped in the 12 steps, clients who are dedicated to the program and are willing to participate in community living have a chance here to begin a bright, new life.
