Pathways is a behavioral health care network with over 50 facilities in a 10-county region. Within that network is Hillcrest Hall in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, a long-term residential treatment facility for adolescent males between the ages of 13 and 18. This program utilizes the 12-step philosophy in addition to individual and group evidence-based therapy services and relapse prevention education.

Accommodations and Food

The residential facility is a large, red brick, farmhouse-style building that sits on a little over 16 acres of land at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. It has four bedrooms and two full baths, with the ability to accommodate up to 16 clients, though it usually hovers around 10. In addition to the living quarters, there are also classrooms, medical facilities, an office, a large dining hall and a full kitchen. All food is prepared on site and served three times a day. The meals are healthy and balanced, with dietary restrictions taken into account.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to admission in to the program, perspective clients and their families must complete pre-enrollment paperwork, which includes a section to be filled out by either a school counselor or therapist. Once completed, clients undergo a detailed screening process to ensure that this facility is the right fit for them; otherwise, referrals to outside agencies can be provided. After admission, there is a two-week evaluation period that includes a psychiatric assessment, a medical examination and a look at the client’s family and social background and history of substance abuse.

Because treatment is entirely voluntary, the client is expected to meet with a counselor to ensure they are prepared to recognize their addiction and be willing to treat it. The program is open to residents of Kentucky, with preference to those who are within the 10 county region networks. Hillcrest Hall is designed primarily for those with a diagnosis of chemical dependency and substance abuse therefore those with potential co-occurring disorders may want to consider exploring other treatment options.

Treatment is comprised of addiction education, 12-step work, relapse prevention, coping skills and identifying triggers. It’s also heavily dependent on the family members’ participation throughout the client’s time in treatment, in addition to getting connected to a support community, such as Alanon.

The clinical staff of Hillcrest Hall includes a LCSW, psychologist, medical staff and teaching staff.

Extras

Clients receive schooling that satisfies state requirements alongside daily recreational activities, exercise and outings. There are also occasional movie night and field trips. Pathways also offers outpatient treatment services in numerous locations.

In Summary

Intense addiction at a young age is a reality that’s often hard to cope with. Hillcrest Hall and other programs through Pathways are designed to provide the best care and education to clients and their families, in order to establish a foundation of what is hopefully be long-term recovery.
