The Basics

In addition to providing residential treatment, Pathway Society also has an outpatient clinic, The Pathway Center, which has been providing services, in some capacity, since 1978. Newly launched in 2005, and located in Santa Clara, the ninth most populous city in the Bay Area, The Pathway Center now offers outpatient counseling and relapse prevention services to adults via evidence-based treatment practices.

Treatment and Staff

The Pathway Center does not provide detox services but it does provide dual diagnosis support. Pathway specializes in Seeking Safety via group therapyCBT is used as an ancillary technique. Clients typically register for a three-month minimum treatment plan: the initial session entails orientation and signing consent forms and on the second visit, clients are assessed and begin attending group therapy on a weekly basis—one or two sessions, maximum. Treatment typically begin with a welcome group session where counselors inform clients of what to expect from Pathway and outpatient treatment. All new clients have an initial individual therapy session, which normally lasts for 60 to 90 minutes. Following this, all one-on-one counseling is scheduled on an individual basis.

Counselors suggest the 12 steps to clients as a form of additional support and also provide meeting schedules, though participation is not mandatory. Clients are encouraged to pursue whatever form of ancillary support works for them, including Celebrate Recovery and SMART Recovery. While there is no family program available at this time, Pathway Society is in the process of developing this component for its outpatient center. There are no formal alternative therapies, but during certain groups, clients are given the opportunity to do some art therapy.

The Pathway Center employs five counselors who are CADCs and RRWs—a mixture of men and women. In terms of caseload, the staff-to-client ratio is one-to-40, while group size hovers around 10 participants.

In addition to its residential program, Pathway House provides sober living, intervention and addiction education.

In Summary

While this United Way-affiliated center currently takes MediCal referrals only, Pathway Society plans to change that policy as it moves toward the Affordable Care Act. In short, Pathway could be ideal supplemental support for someone who is also in some kind of community program, like AA, or a step-down in treatment after completing primary care.
