San Diego CaliforniaPathfinders of San Diego Recovery Home Review

Founded in 1950, the Pathfinders of San Diego Recovery Home is a non-profit organization providing residential alcohol abuse recovery services for men. Operating out of three large residences in the Golden Hill area, near downtown San Diego, California Pathfinders accommodates up to 40 recovering alcoholics. The program is staffed by men who are in long-term recovery from alcoholism.

Accommodations and Food

Each of the Pathfinders houses rooms a minimum of two, maximum five clients per dorm-style bedroom. Each client gets his own personal storage area for clothing and approved personal items.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared and provided for the clients but the men remain responsible for helping to maintain their house in a tidy state. Clients also have to perform a minimal amount of daily assigned house chores.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at a Pathfinders of San Diego Recovery Home is offered as a nine-month program. Pathfinders clients take part in required on-site Big Book groups and daily off-site AA meetings. A sponsor is either provided through the roster of men involved with the house or clients are assisted in finding themselves a sponsor outside of the Pathfinders sphere. Clients must also attend weekly house meetings and individualized hours of mandated group therapy. Individual therapy is available to clients on a walk-in basis whenever any of the counselors’ doors are open.

Pathfinders Recovery Home staff includes CADCs but no therapists or clinicians. Those who need detox must complete that process prior to entering the Pathfinders program. Similarly, men requiring dual diagnosis support must arrange to see a therapist off-site. Referrals for both can be provided to local facilities.

Extras

House recreation activities are planned for by the house and take place on the weekends. These include professional sports games, AA activities and beach days.

In Summary

While a mature organization, the Pathfinders of San Diego Recovery Home program does focus exclusively on alcohol abuse treatment instead of substance abuse in general. However, for men seeking a brotherhood with an old-school 12-step oriented approach, Pathfinder’s Recovery Home is a great choice. The services do come at a very low cost and additional arrangements can be made in the case of prospective clients receiving financial assistance from the government.
