Located in the Denver suburb of Lakewood, Colorado, Pathfinders Recovery Center specializes in the care of male clients under 35 struggling with substance abuse. The Colorado location is the second Pathfinders facility and was founded in July 2017 to meet a local need for addiction resources. Pathfinders combines the 12-step recovery model with clinical, evidence-based and holistic therapeutic methods. The creators of the program are all in recovery and have years of experience with treatment facilities, both as clients and professionals. They wanted to create a program geared toward young men seeking to build life skills and integrate into the recovery community before leaving rehab. Clients stay in upscale sober living homes and participate in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) or outpatient care at an off-site clinical facility.
Accommodations and Food
Pathfinders Colorado has two houses with space for a total of 20 clients at various stages of recovery. Each man shares a room with at least one roommate to allow the senior clients to mentor the newer ones. Clients share a sense of brotherhood and are encouraged to support one another and hold each other accountable. In addition to the mountains and water recreation activities, there are hiking trails nearby. The men plan weekly menus and cook meals together. Each week the staff does an online grocery order to stock food for the homes.
Treatment and Staff
New clients entering treatment at Pathfinders undergo a comprehensive assessment to help determine the most effective treatment plan for each man. On-site sub-acute detox services can be provided but, if necessary, clients can be referred to a local detox program for serious symptoms. Upon physical stabilization, clients transition directly into the PHP.
The initial PHP phase usually lasts about 30 days, with six hours per day of therapy on weekdays and other recovery and fellowship activities evenings and weekends. After phase one PHP, the men transition into phase two for three weeks. The clinical hours remain the same, but there is an increase in privileges like cell phone and computer time. In week eight, the men move into IOP, where they have three groups a week and one individual session. During this stage of treatment, they are required to return to work or school part-time. The focus of the final month of treatment is for the men to develop a routine and support group outside the facility, but remain accountable to their peers in the house as well as their counselors.
The 12-step method is an integral part of the programming, with daily meetings on-site and access to off-site meetings in the local community, with transportation provided. Pathfinders clinicians also integrate evidence-based therapies like CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). The Pathfinders Colorado clinical team is comprised of a consulting MD, ARNP, LCSWs and Master’s-level psychologist. Medication management is available for individuals with co-occurring disorders. Beginning in IOP, clients manage their own meds.
Pathfinders offers each client a complimentary gym membership and transportation to the gym several evenings a week. In addition to the gym, the guys are given a small weekly budget for fun activities. The two houses come together and vote on how to spend the money. Some examples include barbeques, outdoor adventures, professional sports games or 12-step conventions.
Pathfinders Colorado is a recent addition to the already successful Arizona organization that specializes in the care of young men struggling with substance abuse. Pathfinders offers a unique program that was created by men in recovery, for men in recovery. It emphasizes clients supporting each other and building a foundation for successful lives outside treatment. For young men in the Denver area seeking an experienced, compassionate team and an intimate community of recovering fellows, Pathfinders is a great option.
