Pathfinders Recovery Center Arizona Review
Founded in 2017 in beautiful Scottsdale, Arizona, Pathfinders Recovery Center is a treatment program that specializes in helping young men struggling with substance abuse. Pathfinders was created by a group of individuals who are all in recovery who brought their own perspectives on treatment—as clients and professionals—and wanted to create something different. The Pathfinders approach combines a strong peer support vibe with the 12-steps, as well as evidence-based and holistic healing. Clients at Pathfinders stay in structured, supervised homes while participating in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) or outpatient care at an off-site clinical facility.
Accommodations and Food
Pathfinders Arizona operates three comfortable residential houses, located in upscale neighborhoods, with a total of 36 beds. The guys are required to share rooms to help build a sense of community and prevent isolation in early recovery. They are not divided according to phase because the creators of Pathfinders believe it helps to have senior residents act as mentors and model appropriate behavior for the newer ones. Staff supervises an online grocery order once a week for each house and clients are encouraged to plan and prepare meals together.
Treatment and Staff
For most new clients, ambulatory detox services can be provided on-site when they arrive in treatment. In cases of extreme alcohol, heroin and benzodiazepine withdrawal it is usually medically necessary for clients to be referred to a local detox program. Upon stabilization, clients return to begin PHP.
The PHP entails 30 clinical hours a week, as well as after hours meetings and fellowship time. The guys are provided with transportation to the clinical facility each day and given rides home for lunch. This usually lasts 30 days, then clients who are showing progress and working their steps move to phase two, which is the same treatment hours, but allows for more privileges, like limited cell phone use. After 21 days in phase two, the men transition into IOP for 30 days. During IOP, they must return to work or school and attend three groups a week and one individual session. The idea is that men leave the 90-day program already integrated into the local recovery community, with jobs, school commitments and a support system.
The 12-step method is an integral part of the programming, with daily meetings off-site meetings in the local community, with transportation provided. Pathfinders clinicians also integrate evidence-based therapies like CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). The Pathfinders clinical team is comprised of a consulting MD, ARNP, LCSWs and Master’s-level psychologist. Medication management is available for individuals with co-occurring disorders.
Extras
Pathfinders offers an array of community-building outings for the guys, including a gym membership and Top Golf membership for each person. In addition, the clients get a weekly “fun budget” to spend on an experience or adventure. This can include things like sports games, movies and concerts.
