Tuscan ArizonaThe Basics

The Pascua Yaqui Centered Spirit Program is a mental health services program under the Tribal Health Department with services reserved for registered members of the Pascua Yaqui Native American tribe based in Arizona. Traditional tribal customs combined with Christian faith oriented practices form the belief system and traditions of the PY tribe and the Centered Spirit Program provides a unique treatment program that is individualized and culturally sensitive. With two facilities—one in Tucson and the other in Tempe— this CARF accredited program serves tribal members in Pima and Maricopa counties.

Treatment and Staff

Two outpatient programs are available through the CSP; the Adult Services Program and New Beginnings. Before admittance into one of the two programs, all clients must be bio-psycho-socially assessed. All clients must be enrolled tribal members and if CSP does not offer the correct level of treatment, referrals are offered through the State of Arizona Tribal Regional Behavioral Health Authority for subcontracted services.

Recovery resources include substance abuse counseling, detox and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). The New Beginnings clinic specializes in the prescribing and administrating Suboxone and Methadone. All clients see a Psychiatrist regularly for medication management and check-ins. Clients begin their treatment process by having a physical exam to test for additional health concerns. Once admitted, the client develops an individualized treatment plan with their case manager. Depending on the plan, clients may come in daily for their dose and attend group therapy sessions several times per week. Groups are typically conducted with a mixture of evidence-based practices and traditional Native American counseling. Groups focus on psycho-education, relapse prevention and life skill development. Individual therapy and family therapy is also available. Clients may also attend Sweat Lodge ceremonies, 12-step meetings or White Bison meetings to deepen their recovery and connection to cultural heritage.

CSP’s Adult Services track is for individuals who do not require MAT. Similar treatment services are available including group and individual therapy as well as family counseling. Couples counseling is also available if requested by the client. Clients typically attend services one to three times per week, with attendance based on the client’s agreement and the suggested intensity of care by the treatment staff. CSP may also perform home visits for individuals who are disabled or unable to arrange transportation.

All treatment is facilitated by Master’s-level mental health practitioners with alcohol and drug counseling credentials including LCSWs, LPCs, CASACs and psychiatrists.

Extras

The PYT Centered Spirit Program offers unique services that are centered around the tribe’s traditions and beliefs. Sweat Lodge ceremonies are available for clients to attend as well as acupuncture and other holistic health treatments.

In Summary

The Centered Spirit Program’s outpatient treatment options give clients the opportunity to build a foundation of recovery while still attending to work, family and life obligations. CSP provides individual, group, family and couples counseling as well as MAT. Treatment is both aligned with traditional mental health standards and incorporates tribal customs making programs accessible and relevant for the unique needs of tribal members. Overall, CSP tracks are facilitated by mental health professionals using evidence based methods that align with the Pascua Yaqui traditions.
