PACThe Basics

Founded by the late Richard Fuller, a Master’s-level psychologist in 1979, Park Avenue Center offers gender-specific outpatient treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, with dual diagnosis support. Located in Minneapolis—the land of 1,000 treatment centers—this facility has programs specifically for African Americans and opiate addicts with co-occurring disorders. Traditional outpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs are available as well.

Treatment and Staff

Clients receive an initial assessment with a counselor that includes a review of their addiction history. An individualized treatment plan is provided. Treatment involves evidence-based practices and a strong 12-step emphasis. Clients receive a combination of group and individual therapy. Depending on each person’s needs, they attend three to five sessions of therapy per week. Detox is not offered, but referrals can be provided.

The IOP and standard outpatient programs have sessions available in the mornings and evenings, Mondays through Fridays, from 9 am to 12:05 pm and from 5 to 9:05 pm. IOP clients start with three groups a week and have the option to step down to once a week after 12 weeks of treatment. Group therapy incorporates CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), relapse prevention and psychodynamic therapy. Clients are required to participate in 12-step meetings throughout the week.

Co-occurring groups meet Mondays through Fridays, from 9 am to 12:05 pm. Clients in the dual diagnosis programs have weekly sessions with a psychiatrist and attend groups that address their mental health issues.

The opioid-specific co-occurring group is Tuesdays and Thursdays and includes individual counseling, psychoeducation and process groups focusing on addiction and mental health. Community-based self-help groups like NA and SMART Recovery, mindfulness, relaxation and exercise are also available to clients in this track and  there is education about medication-assisted treatment, pain management and HIV/AIDS.

The African-American program addresses family-of-origin issues, poverty culture, anger management, domestic violence, trauma and victimization. It is available to clients in the men’s substance abuse and dual diagnosis programs and the women’s dual diagnosis program.

The facility receives county funds and accepts insurance to help clients pay for treatment. Sliding scale payment is an option for those in need.

The staff includes psychiatrists, Master’s-level therapists and LADCs.

Extras

Park Avenue offers gender-specific, free, supervised, off-site housing to IOP clients in need. Art therapy, recreational therapy and equine therapy are also part of treatment.

The family program includes education sessions and group therapy. Aftercare is provided at no additional cost. Clients meet once a week for 12 consecutive weeks after treatment has been completed.

In Summary

For those in the Twin Cities looking for a gender-specific program that specializes in dual diagnosis, Park Avenue Center is a great option. With experts in mental health and addiction, as well as staff members who are culturally sensitive, it offers a unique, 12-step based foundation of sobriety.
