The Basics
Palmerston was established in Perth, Australia in 1980 as a research and rehabilitation facility for illicit drug users. Since then, the organization has expanded to become one of the largest non-profit organizations offering substance abuse treatment in Western Australia. In addition to residential treatment, the organization offers outpatient care for addiction recovery and mental health at seven locations. While the main office is in Perth, there are four other locations in the Perth metro area and three facilities in various southern coastal cities of Western Australia.
Treatment and Staff
The Palmerston locations offer a wide variety of programs. The main office serves as the hub for therapeutic services. Before treatment begins, potential clients undergo an initial assessment, which helps the staff develop individualized treatment plans. For those in need of a more intensive treatment, referrals can be made to the Palmerston Farm program or other inpatient facilities. The exact length and intensity of treatment is determined based on individual need.
Group and individual therapy for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders are available at all Palmerston offices, however, evening treatment hours are only offered at the main Perth location. This facility also serves as the base for drug court services and programs for clients who have been legally mandated to attend treatment. Therapy employs evidence-based practices, such as CBT and DBT, and clients are required to attend peer-support 12-step or SMART Recovery meetings in their communities.
The south Perth metro Palmerston locations are in the suburban cities of Fremantle, Rockingham, Fernlie and Mandurah. In addition to many other services, these offices provide home-based withdrawal management in cooperation with St John of God Hospital’s Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal Network (DAWN). Health professionals assist clients in managing withdrawal from alcohol and drugs in the comfort of their home environment using Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). DAWN’s experienced nurses work closely with doctors and provide regular visits during this period.
The Palmerston Great Southern Community Drug Service Team is based in Albany and covers a large geographical area. With offices in the cities of Denmark, Katanning and Mt Barker, these locations offer group and individual therapy during regular business hours. Additionally, the Albany office is home to a needle exchange program.
Staff are Master’s-level LCSWs, CADCs, psychologists, nurses and childcare workers.
Extras
Additional services include a family program that helps families who are experiencing drug and alcohol problems, community education services and practical support with welfare issues, such as housing, employment and training.
