Lake Worth FloridaThe Basics

Located in the idyllic Palm Beach area in Florida, the Palm Beach Recovery Coalition’s GW House is a sober living facility for men who are ready to continue their recovery following primary care. The house was founded by Gail and Grant Skolnick, a husband and wife duo who felt passionate about bringing a recovery resource to individuals looking for a supportive recovery community. A member of the Substance Abuse Coalition of Palm Beach County, the Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach Continuum of Care and the Palm Beach County HOT Team Provider, the GW House offers a wide range of funding and community resources for their residents who need financial support as they begin the next phase of life in sobriety.

Accommodations and Food

The GW House is apartment-style living with two to three men per apartment. Located within a short drive to the beach, clients can take advantage of the relaxed lifestyle while living in a safe and sober environment. In total, the house offers 10 apartments that may be full or in varying degrees of occupancy. Each room is furnished with twin beds and storage for belongings as well as a closet space. Bathrooms have showers and additional storage for toiletries. All of the apartments are close to each other with common TV rooms and meeting rooms allowing clients to stay connected.

A media room has a flat screen TV with premium cable channels. High-speed internet is available for clients to use if they bring their own laptop, as is a house phone as long as clients are calling sobriety-supportive people or their sponsor. A fully equipped kitchen is available that is stocked with donated food. Many clients have food stamps and may bring in their own food if needed. Residents must learn how to cook and may use the outdoor BBQ at their leisure. Coffee and tea is always available.

Rules and Regulations

The GW House provides clients with enough freedom to find work or go back to school while maintaining their sobriety in a safe environment. Clients are encouraged to stay for a minimum of six months to a year to ensure they are ready to maintain their recovery outside of a structured environment. The facility does not accept insurance but residents aren’t expected to pay the weekly rent until they have employment. Due to the grants and funding available, GW House can cover costs until each individual is prepared to pay their way and support themselves. The staff works with clients to build skills that include balancing a checkbook and meeting financial responsibility. Clients are expected to secure a job as soon as possible.

Each morning, clients are required to make their bed and clean up after themselves. Rooms must be tidy and the kitchen must be cleaned up following food preparation and meals.

As some clients obtain either a day or night job, the house managers are flexible and work with each resident and their schedule. If a client is enrolled in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or another treatment program, they must inform the staff and adjust their schedules accordingly. All residents must attend daily 12-step meetings and have a sponsor to guide them through the steps, a requirement to maintain residence.

All clients have a curfew of 7 pm at the beginning of their stay. If the client has a night job, meetings or an appointment with supportive family members or a sponsor, the curfew can be negotiated. Clients are not allowed to go out in the evening without a purpose or healthy intentions. After a six month period, the curfew is adjusted to a later time that is dependent on the resident’s needs. On the weekends, clients typically attend meetings, BBQ if the weather permits, go to the beach and gym and participate in activities that build a sense of community and pride in themselves.

Extras

The GW House has a contract with a local gym called The Zoo that is just two short blocks from the apartments. Clients are encouraged to go to the gym to build their self-esteem and develop a sense of brotherhood.

Alumni members stay connected to the house and typically attend groups and meetings with current residents to lend their experience, strength and hope.

In Summary

The GW House is a sober living home for men supportive of the recovery process. Clients live with relatively light structure while still keeping their sobriety a priority. The staff and other residents support each other through meetings, weekly check-ins and by participating in personal development activities. Clients must get jobs, attend 12-step meetings and maintain cleanliness so that they learn the skills to become productive members of society.
