The Basics

Pacific Lodge Youth Services is a non-profit substance abuse treatment center for boys and young men that has been in operation since 1923. Residents of its inpatient treatment program experience a peaceful atmosphere in the wooded landscape of Woodland Hills, California. Young men between the ages of 13 and 18 benefit from the structured residential, outpatient and transitional living programs. Many clients reach The Lodge after having been in the juvenile justice system. Through evidence-based treatment practices, Pacific Lodge offers individual, group and family therapy in addition to classes at an accredited school.

Accommodations and Food

There are three cottages on the premises, each with 17 beds, for residents of the inpatient program. Several recreational areas are available, including a full-sized gym, pool and a track. There is also a chapel and conference center. The facility is a wooded compound where nature takes on the role of healer in the lives of the residents. Many activities take place outdoors, including team-building exercises. Residents enjoy youthful camaraderie with their peers as though they were away at summer camp. The environment provides a way for the young boys to incorporate what they’ve learned through individual, group and family therapy into their relationships with peers in a safe place.

Meals are prepared by staff chefs and served in a dining hall.

Treatment and Staff

Residents and outpatient clients undergo psychiatric and psychological assessments and evaluations for individualized treatment plans. Pacific Lodge employees are certified substance abuse counselors, psychiatrists and psychologists. Residents participate in weekly individual and group therapy sessions. Much of the week’s schedule consists of recreational and group-bonding activities outside of group therapy. Treatment consists of group therapy as well as a unifying theme of peer accountability.

Services at The Lodge include an off-campus facility for outpatient treatment in nearby Canoga Park. This facility offers counseling to residents as well as youth in the community. The outpatient facility caters to those between the ages of 14 and 25 who are dual diagnosed. Outpatient services include individual therapy, CBT, motivational interviewing, relapse prevention and case management mapping-enhance counseling. Urine testing is available for young people on probation.

Residents who have completed treatment at Pacific Lodge may apply for transitional living at Ben’s House. The three-bedroom home is available to six young men between the ages of 18 and 21. Many of the residents are in the criminal justice or foster care system. Some will face an end to foster care once they’ve reached the age of 18, therefore the structure provided at Ben’s House allows them to adjust to life without the threat of homelessness or potential drug use in their immediate environment.

Extras

Art therapy, volunteerism, animal therapy, experiential therapy, horticulture therapy, Fleet Street Bike Project, Work Experience Program, and classes like culinary arts and African drumming are all available.

In Summary

Young men at the Lodge develop real-life skills and self-esteem through a mixture of traditional methods in evidence-based treatment and engaging activities. For boys who have been in trouble and are looking to develop new ways of living, the treatment and group-based activities offered here could definitely teach them how to process substance abuse issues and discover new ways of having fun.
