Established in 1948, Ozanam is a residential program for adolescent boys and girls that offers adjunct substance abuse treatment. This facility is located in Kansas City, Missouri and provides evidence-based group and individual therapy using the Matrix Model, as well as holistic approaches and trauma-informed care, using The Sanctuary Model. Additionally, these programs include family support and education and are available to clients who are between the ages of 12 and 18.
Accommodations and Food
The Ozanam campus offers three residences with dorm-style bedrooms that house 10 to 12 clients in each room, totaling approximately 80 clients overall. Rooms are furnished with twin beds, dressers, desks and bathrooms throughout the buildings. Large common areas are equipped with couches, TVs, books, board games and a shared computer and a phone.
In addition, this facility houses several classrooms, a dining hall, a music room, a green house and a garden. The sprawling grounds have several picnic tables and benches, shaded by trees and surrounded by greenery along with a spiritual center that includes a place of worship.
The program offers many activities and comfortable accommodations for the standard three to six-month stay; including a swimming pool, basketball court, softball field and gym.
This facility prepares all meals on site in a large industrial kitchen that offers cafeteria-style food. There are always a couple of meal options that are healthy and snacks, such as fresh fruit, are available throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
Ozanam’s treatment employs trauma-informed therapy through The Sanctuary Model, which encourages non-violence and improved communication through education and structure, as well as evidence-based practices. Additional support for clients with co-occurring disorders, which includes medication management, is also available. With programs individualized to the client’s specific needs, holistic options—such as art and music therapy and horticultural therapies— are also offered. Spiritual aspects of treatment are provided in a non-denominational setting and implemented to raise awareness and provide an additional level of support, however, this aspect of the program is completely voluntary.
In conjunction with substance abuse treatment, Ozanam is a fully accredited school that is able to provide core subjects like math, English and science for grades K-12.
The Family Focus program is an extended aftercare option that serves as an educational and outreach resource for clients after they have completed primary care. It provides support to family members, continued education and therapy.
Ozanam is a specialized treatment program for adolescents and a saving grace for children whose experiences have led them down a path to substance abuse or violence. It offers a nurturing and structured environment where they can receive treatment as well as continue their education, learn valuable life skills and gain tools to open communication with their family and themselves.
