Oxnard Women’s Center is run by Protoypes, an organization with several facilities that treat women for substance abuse, mental illness and domestic violence. Since many mothers find it difficult to be apart from their little ones during treatment, this facility allows them to keep their families together. Over the course of six to nine months, they are able to find stability.

The rehab is located in Oxnard, a coastal city just northwest of Los Angeles. Other Prototypes’ facilities include Pomona Women’s Center.

Accommodations and Food

Oxnard Women’s Center houses up to 56 women and 29 children at a time, treating women ages 18 and above. The living accommodations are set up dorm-style, with eight clients to a room; women with children have separate quarters. Furnishings are minimal, with twin-sized beds and dressers.

Meals are used as an opportunity for the women to bond over food. The building has a fully-stocked kitchen where clients can cook dishes of their choice. The food is served in the dining hall and eaten as a group; whoever did not cook that day pitches in with the clean up.

Smoking is restricted to the appropriate break times.

Treatment and Staff

Women who attend this program typically suffer from substance abuse, trauma, domestic abuse, complex medical conditions, anger management, legal issues and homelessness. With the program’s specialization in navigating the criminal justice system, those who have run into trouble with the law can find help here.

Upon admission, all clients receive a psychiatric evaluation and medication is prescribed when necessary. A medical detox is not available, although recommendations to an outside facility can be made. Treatment time varies depending on individual needs, although this is typically a long-term program; the average stay is six to nine months.

Treatment focuses around issues specific to women like trauma, parenting, self-esteem and codependency; many evidence-based therapies such as CBT and DBT are used. The schedule involves individual therapy on an as-needed basis as well as group therapy. Group topics include relapse prevention, body image, parenting, employment, grief, trauma, abuse, codependency, processing and nutrition. The rehab also hosts several on-site AA/NA meetings per week, exposing the women to the world of the 12 steps.

Residents acquire important life skills during their stay, participating in vocational and educational training that includes on-site GED classes and college courses. Family visits are permitted on the weekends; those who wish to have family therapy sessions can do so with the primary counselor.

The staff includes psychiatrists, counselors and therapists.

Extras

Residents have a chance to move their bodies once a week in a guided yoga class that is taught on-site by a professional yoga teacher. They can also walk around the property with their children, enjoying fresh air and exercise.

Once the residential program is completed, clients have access to outpatient programs as well as aftercare support.

In Summary

Oxnard Women’s Center is an intimate, gender-specific facility that helps women with children get back on their feet. For those who are unable to pay for treatment, there is limited state funding that covers the entire cost. However, the cost is $3,900 per month for those who able to pay.
