The Basics
Oxford House Yukon is a men’s sober living facility located in Anchorage. One of four Oxford Houses in Alaska, Yukon has been a transitional home for men ages 18 and over since 2003.
Accommodations and Amenities
OHY is a small, tidy home situated on a corner lot in a quiet residential neighborhood. The house has eight bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, dining area and a kitchen. Two of the rooms are double occupancy and the remaining six bedrooms are singles.Each resident has a twin bed, nightstand and dresser. All told, OHY was accommodate a total of 10 clients. Residents are responsible for their own linens, food, cleaning supplies and personal items. The house provides a laundry facility, a house phone (for local calls only), WiFi and cable.
Rules and Regulations
All men must be at least six months sober, gainfully employed, and willing to make a 90-day commitment in order to live at OHY. While there are no curfews or in-house meetings, clients are expected to stay sober, clean up after themselves and behave in a respectful manner towards their housemates. House managers are democratically elected by the other men, and are responsible for overseeing house upkeep and acting as liaisons between the building owner and the residents.
OHY interviews potential clients on Sundays at 1 pm once they have filled out an application. All house members must be in agreement before any new residents are approved. There is zero-tolerance for substance abuse, stealing, violence and threats to fellow clients. Residents are encouraged but not required to attend AA/NA meetings, and to work a 12-step program.
In Summary
In all, Oxford House Yukon offers low-cost living for men in early recovery who may need extra support without a lot of structure. Consistent with the Oxford philosophy, OHY promotes the principle of personal responsibility by insisting that all men are fully employed and accountable to each other. Though this might not be the right environment for someone who wants additional guidance and discipline, those who feel confident in their recovery should find OHY a good fit.
