The Basics
Oxford House Paynter is a men’s sober living facility located in Dover, Delaware. Situated on a corner lot in a quiet, residential neighborhood, the Paynter house provides affordable housing in a safe, minimally structured environment for men seeking support in early sobriety. It is part of the international network of Oxford Houses, each of which is an independent and democratically run home.
Accommodations and Amenities
The Paynter house is a tidy one-story home with an expansive lawn and a daylight basement. It accommodates eight men in small private bedrooms and each client has a twin bed, nightstand and dresser. There are three shared bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, dining area and laundry room. The house is fully furnished and has Wi-Fi, cable TV and a house phone for unlimited local and long-distance calls.
The back yard is fenced-in and includes patio furniture and an outdoor grill. Linens, food and cleaning supplies are not provided.
Rules and Regulations
Eligible clients must be fully employed and have at least 30 days of sobriety prior to admission. Interviews take place on Sundays and all potential candidates must be approved unanimously by house members. A two-week deposit is required and is due prior to moving in.
All residents are on probation for their first two weeks and have a 10 pm curfew. Anyone caught using drugs and/or alcohol is given 30 minutes to vacate the premises.
All residents are assigned weekly chores and given a specific day to do their laundry. There is a mandatory house meeting every Monday at 7 pm. Clients who fail to complete house chores or attend the in-house meeting are fined.
The house manager is elected by residents for a six-month term and facilitates urine tests, collects rent and fines and is responsible for paying the rent and utilities. While residents are not required to attend outside support groups, attendance at AA/NA meetings is strongly recommended.
