Oxford House Northern LightsThe Basics

Oxford House Northern Lights is one of four Oxford House sober living facilities in Alaska. Located in a residential neighborhood in Anchorage, OHNL has provided sober living for men since 2002.

Accommodations and Amenities

OHNL accommodates nine men, with eight single occupancy rooms and one double occupancy master bedroom. Three bathrooms are shared amongst the residents. The common areas include a living room, stocked kitchen, dining area and laundry room. Basic utilities are included but WiFi and cable are available for an additional fee. Residents are responsible for their own food, cleaning supplies and personal items.

Situated on a corner lot, secluded by trees and a tall wooden fence for privacy, OHNL provides five parking spaces behind the house for client use.

Rules and Regulations

All potential candidates must have at least six months clean and sober and be gainfully employed. In order to prove that they are serious about their recovery, clients are asked for a 90-day commitment upon admission. There is a zero-tolerance policy for substance abuse, stealing or violence of any kind. The house manager, who is elected by the residents, serves a six-month term and screens all potential clients prior acceptance into the house. After the initial interview, remaining residents then must unanimously approve the candidate. In order to keep costs low and promote independence, OHNL does not conduct drug testing or appoint one person to enforce house rules. Each resident is responsible for themselves and their sobriety, as well as keeping their own personal space tidy.  Cleaning common areas is a group effort.

While Oxford House was originally founded by sober members of AA, there are no 12-step meeting attendance required for residents; men are accountable to each other and their own personal commitment to recovery. Rent is due on the first of each month and non-payment is grounds for eviction.

In Summary

OHNL offers low cost sober living for men ages 18 and over who have completed inpatient treatment or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and are looking for continued support in the early stages of recovery. With various locations around Alaska and throughout the US, Oxford House gives recovering addicts structure and hope for long-term sobriety.
