The Basics
Oxford House Nebraska Street is part of the international Oxford House network of democratically run sober living homes that provide a safe and sober environment for individuals in recovery from addiction. In keeping with the spirit of the nonprofit organization, the Nebraska Street house in Sioux City, Iowa offers gender-specific transitional living for women, with an emphasis on personal responsibility and accountability.
Accommodations and Amenities
The Nebraska Street house accommodates eight women in three double-occupancy rooms and two single-occupancy rooms. There are three bathrooms, a fully-equipped kitchen, a dining room, a living room with a cable TV and a computer room with free Wi-Fi.
The house itself is a two-story home on a quiet residential street. Trees shield the front of the house creating privacy.
Rules and Regulations
Oxford Houses follow a strict abstinence policy and relapse is grounds for eviction. Residents must pay their rent on time and be respectful of themselves and others in the home. Each house has a democratically elected president and secretary who are responsible for enforcing curfews, collecting rent and addressing household grievances. Nebraska House requires that residents attend two 12-step meetings per week and have an active sponsor.
Each Oxford House is also a part of an Oxford House chapter that includes other Oxford homes within a 100-mile radius. There are monthly regional meetings and a yearly national conference that serve to unite house members in purpose and fellowship.
In Summary
The Nebraska Street house is a small but comfortable home for women where they can develop autonomy and a firm sober foundation using the 12 steps. This transitional living allows women facing the same circumstances and challenges to independently build a sober and happy life.
