Oxford House Lake Smith is a sober living home in the international network of Oxford Houses, a non-profit organization providing a safe and sober living environments for newly sober men and women.

All Oxford Houses are democratically run transitional homes with a focus on independent living and personal responsibility. The thousands of Oxford Houses worldwide offer a second chance to men, women and their families alike. Oxford House Lake Smith is a gender-specific home for men located in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Accommodations and Amenities

Lake Smith accommodates eight men in four double occupancy rooms. There are two shared bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a living room with large couches and cable TV. There is also free WiFi throughout the house and a full laundry facility.

The house itself is a residential two-story home, with a garage, plenty of windows and a grassy front and back yard with several large trees. There is also ample street parking and the house is very close to a nearby lake for recreation.

Rules and Regulations

The rules at the Oxford Houses are consistent from house to house. There a zero-tolerance policy for drug and alcohol use on the premises; those found in violation are asked to leave immediately. Residents must pay rent on time and must be respectful of themselves and others in the home. Additionally, all men must contribute to the overall cleanliness of the home and complete assigned chores on a regular basis.

In order to be invited into an Oxford House, clients must have completed either a residential or detox program as Oxford Houses do not typically provide treatment services. All new residents must be approved by current clients before admittance. The Lake Smith house also requires that clients to be employed or enrolled in school. Additionally, all are required to attend either two 12-step meetings or three self-help meetings per week. The curfew for the home is 12:30 am.


Representatives from each house meet with those from other Oxford Houses within a 100-mile radius every month to exchange information and to discuss resolutions for problems that arise in the homes. There is also a World Convention for clients and representatives of the Oxford Houses to discuss the functionality of the sober living system as well as new techniques and treatments for addiction.
