Oxford House GravoisThe Basics

Oxford House Gravois is a small sober living home for men in St. Louis that is part of the international network of Oxford Houses. Each Oxford House is an independent and democratically run home that provides a safe and sober environment for those in recovery from addiction. With a focus on independent living and personal responsibility, the thousands of Oxford Houses worldwide offer a second chance to men, women, and their families.

Accommodations and Amenities

Gravois House is located in a residential area of St Louis with access to the city bus system just a few blocks away. Clients also have easy access to shopping with a few small markets on the block. The house itself is a red brick two-story single-family home with windows overlooking the street and a small front stoop. There is also plenty of street parking.

Although each home is independently run, the basic amenities are the same throughout the Oxford House network. Oxford House Gravois—one of 43 Oxford Houses in Missouri—accommodates eight male clients. Each resident gets their own small room with a bed, desk and cabinet as well as a small closet. The bathrooms are shared as are the living and dining rooms. There is a fully equipped kitchen, a TV with cable and Wi-Fi.

Rules and Regulations

Rules at the Oxford Houses are fairly simple. Drug or alcohol use results in eviction and residents must pay rent on time and be respectful to their fellows. In order to be admitted to an Oxford House, individuals must have already completed either a residential program or a detox program. While Oxford House was founded by a member of AA, residents are not required to attend 12-step meetings. Clients are encouraged to participate in the 12-step fellowship of their choice, but the main focus of sustaining recovery is self-help and a democratic model. All residents are admitted only by approval of all house members.

Gravois, like all Oxford House sober living homes, is also a part of a chapter that includes every Oxford House within a 100-mile radius. A representative from each house meets with the other chapter representatives once a month to exchange information and democratically reach solutions for any problems that may arise in the homes.

In Summary

Oxford Houses are a well-functioning and successful system of transitional houses for those in need of a simple sober living environment. Residents are required to pay rent on time and keep the houses sober and clean, helping them to develop their independent living skills.
