Oxford House Douglas StreetThe Basics

Oxford House Douglas Street for men is one of several Oxford Houses located in Sioux City, Iowa. It is part of the international network of Oxford House Inc. sober living homes—a non-profit corporation that connects sober men and women in gender-specific supportive environments. All Oxford Houses are democratically run with a focus on independent living and personal responsibility. The thousands of Oxford Houses worldwide offer a second chance for men, women who are rebuilding their lives.

Accommodations and Amenities

Oxford House Douglas Street is located in a quiet, residential neighborhood in Woodbury County. A single story mid-century red brick home with a large front and back yard, Douglas Street accommodates eight men in three double occupancy rooms and two singles.

Clients have a twin-sized bed, a desk and a small personal cabinet. There are two shared full bathrooms and one half bathroom, a kitchen, a living room with a cable TV, a garage and on-site laundry facilities.

Rules and Regulations

In order to be admitted into an Oxford House, individuals must have completed either residential treatment or a detox program as Oxford Houses do not provide these services. Oxford House regulations are fairly simple: drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited on the premises, residents must pay their rent on time and must be respectful of themselves and others in the home. Involvement in 12-step fellowships is not a requirement for Oxford Houses, though it is highly encouraged.

In addition to these standard rules, Douglas Street requires men to attend a weekly in-house meeting. Each house has a democratically elected president who represents the house in regional and national conferences, collects rent monies and resolve any household issues and disputes.

Extras

Oxford House fellows from neighboring counties and cities have monthly gatherings where they unite to establish a sober community.

In addition to the regional and national conferences, the Oxford House organization also hosts a World Convention where representatives and clients meet to discuss the functionality of the Oxford Houses and new techniques and strategies int he world of addiction treatment.

In Summary

In keeping with Oxford House continuity, Douglas House is a comfortable, modest residence with little in the way of amenities. Sioux City is a recovery-friendly city, making sober resources and treatment easily accessible. Men who have a history of relapse or who are early in their recovery may find the structure too lenient, but individuals who are secure in their sobriety will find an ideal environment for developing autonomy and independence.
