big hornThe Basics

Oxford House Big Horn is a men’s sober living facility in Sheridan, a town in the scenic Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. The Oxford House worldwide network of sober homes provides democratically run, self-supporting and drug-free living for men and women following substance abuse treatment. Big Horn is the only Oxford House in Wyoming and has been providing sober living for men ages 18 and over since 2009.

Accommodations and Amenities

Oxford House Big Horn is a two-story, A-framed house with four double-occupancy bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room and kitchen. All rooms are furnished with two twin beds, nightstands and a shared dresser. The common areas are comfortably furnished and laundry facilities are included along with cleaning supplies.

Clients are responsible for purchasing and preparing their own food. Wi-Fi is provided but residents who wish to use it must pay a $10 monthly fee.

Rules and Regulations

All residents must be at least six months sober and either employed or enrolled in school. There are no curfews or in-house meetings, but clients are expected to maintain sobriety, clean up after themselves and behave in a respectful manner.

While the founders of Oxford House were sober AA members, Big Horn does not require attendance at 12-step meetings. In order to discourage clients from turning Big Horn into a flop house, a 90-day commitment is required.

The house manager is democratically elected by the other residents and oversees the upkeep of the house and acts as the liaison between the home’s owner and residents. Weekly house chores are assigned by the house manager. Residents at Big Horn democratically plan a Sunday outing every other week as a way to engage in sober social activities.

Individuals interested in moving into the house must meet for an interview after which house members must unanimously approve the new resident. There is a zero tolerance policy for substance abuse, stealing, violence and threats to other clients and violations are cause for eviction. To be eligible for re-entry, any client expelled  for substance abuse must have completed residential treatment.

In Summary

Oxford House Big Horn provides men in early recovery with a comfortable, safe and sober environment. The house manager is not paid and there are no other staff, keeping the cost low and making this home ideal for men in the early stages of sobriety who are on a budget.
