The Basics
Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey opened in 1906 and is now part of the Atlantic Health System. The facility is known for its state-of-the-art treatment methods. The behavioral health division offers an outpatient program that helps adults overcome substance abuse issues without interruption to family or work commitments.
Treatment and Staff
Overlook offers a 90-day Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that involves ten hours a week of therapy. Three evenings a week, clients participate in group therapy for three hours at a time. They are also required to attend one 60-minute individual therapy appointment per week. It can be made with their primary therapist any time during the week.
Overlook IOP program is therapy-based, offering many different treatment methods to clients including CBT, DBT, EMDR and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Additionally, they provide treatment and care for clients with co-occurring disorders and weekly drug and alcohol screenings. Detox is not available, though referrals for outside treatment are provided.
After clients complete the IOP program, they have the option to step down into an intensive aftercare program. This program runs another 90 days and includes group once a week for three hours, with a focus on relapse prevention and drug and alcohol education.
The staff is made up of clinical psychiatrists, addiction specialists and several advanced practice nurses (APN) who are certified in addiction treatment.
Extras
Overlook offers a family therapy and support program and couples therapy for the loved ones of those in the substance abuse program. This family group meets once a week for two hours. Individual sessions with family members can also be scheduled, at an additional cost.
Overlook is not your average sterile, hospital-based IOP program. In addition to the usual therapeutic modalities, a wide array of optional holistic methods are integrated into the program. These include art therapy, expressive therapy, play therapy, guided meditation, drum circle, tai chi, music therapy and yoga. If clients choose to participate in these activities, some additional expenses may apply.
In Summary
Overlook Medical Center is widely recognized for its advanced treatments and state-of-the-art facility. This is not the place for those needing structured inpatient treatment or a 12-step based program, but it does offer a solid outpatient program with a few unique features. With traditional and holistic approaches, Overlook offers its clients many resources for a successful recovery.
