The Basics
Outside In is a private, non-profit organization providing human services since 1985 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Beginning with only a few innovative outreach programs, it has since grown to a network of CARF-accredited programs with a variety of services including outpatient and residential services for adults and adolescents. Outside In’s outpatient substance abuse treatment program focuses on the Stages of Change model of treatment and incorporates psycho-educational and evidence based methods.
Treatment and Staff
Outside In’s outpatient program begins with an initial assessment and evaluation to determine whether basic outpatient services or the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) are the best fit. Clients work with staff to develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to fit the needs of the client. All programs incorporate individual and group therapy, family therapy and aftercare.
All sessions are scheduled between the client and his or her counselor, with group sessions formed as-needed and hosted in client-friendly environments. Staff utilizes the Stages of Change model which guides clients through five distinct phases of recovery: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. An individual may complete or start these stages over numerous times throughout their recovery. Treatment and therapies are adapted according to the client’s current stage. The 12 steps are not included in the program, but attendance of meetings is encouraged once the program is completed.
The adolescent program relies heavily on peer-to-peer feedback and dialog, also using the same Stages of Change criteria as the adult track.
The staff at Outside In consists of CADCs, LPCs and LSWs.
Extras
In addition to comprehensive outpatient services, Outside In also offers a residential treatment program as well as a wide variety of general human services including multi-dimensional family therapy services and a range of residential programs including a weekend program for young men, a year-round school with GED and vocational programs, a 24-bed residential adolescent track known as the “Voyager Program” that is activity-intensive and a 48-bed adult inpatient program called “Pathway to Recovery”.
Teleconferencing sessions are available in addition to in-person meetings for outpatient clients who have difficulty attending sessions on-site.

Treatment uses individual and group sessions to implement the Stages of Change model, which allows clients to progress through recovery in their own time. Individualized treatment plans are modified according to progress, allowing clients own their recovery experience while working with credentialed staff.
