Greensburg PennsylvaniaOutside In Residential Review

Outside In is a private, non-profit organization providing human services. Founded in 1985 with a few innovative outreach programs, Outside In has since grown to offer a variety of services including outpatient and residential substance abuse treatment.

Located in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, there is a comprehensive range of inpatient options available for both adults and adolescents. With short and long-term programs, a weekend program and an education program, clients may choose the track that best suits their unique recovery needs.

Food and Accommodations

Each residential program has its own vast 140-acre campus in Laurel Highlands, a popular recreational area in Southwestern Pennsylvania. All residents are accommodated in cabins. The Voyagers program has 24-beds while the Pathway to Recovery sleeps 48. Cabins are simply furnished with two to four beds with bathrooms housed camp-style in out buildings with stall-showers and sinks.

Treatment sessions and educational programs are held in separate facilities on campus, as is the kitchen, the living area and recreation rooms. Food is served cafeteria style with a variety of healthy options that typically include standard American-fare and comfort foods.

Treatment and Staff

There are four unique residential programs offered by Outside In, each designed to meet the needs of specific clientele. The Weekend Program is a prevention and treatment program for boys between the ages of 13 and 18 that arranges outings and excursions on Saturdays and Sundays that foster life skill building, independence and self-reliance. In-home case management services are incorporated to ensure that young people remain focused on their goals Monday through Friday.

The Education Program is a licensed year-round private school that offers educational services for troubled students and those who need more individual attention. Students are typically con-currently enrolled in one of the Outside In residential tracks and find this alternative education helps to not only fulfill state academic requirements, but also incorporates vocational and career elements, making long-term goals a part of the curriculum.

The Voyagers program is the most comprehensive adolescent residential program. Designed for boys between the ages of 13 and 18, this four- to six-month long program incorporates weekly individual therapy, progress meetings, daily group therapy and family sessions. When clients are not participating in therapeutic sessions, they are engaged in activity-intensive programming to help develop pro-social skills and treat co-occurring disorders. Students focus on building teamwork skills, trust and social skills as well as learning how to work hard, communicate and develop integrity and respect.

The Pathway to Recovery is a gender-specific adult residential program. The Stages of Change model as well as Motivational Interviewing (MI) are used for treatment. Clients are initially assessed to determine a long-term individualized treatment plan that is modified accordingly as residents progress. Treatment typically involves weekly or bi-weekly individual sessions and group therapy twice a day. Family therapy is also integrated, as are daily educational seminars. The 12 steps are not incorporated into the program, however clients may be refereed to a local AA/NA chapter following treatment.

The staff at Outside In consists of CADCs, LPCs and LSWs.

Extras

In addition to comprehensive residential services, Outside In also offers a solid outpatient treatment program. Implementing the Stages of Change treatment model, this track combines structured treatment with group, individual and multi-dimensional family services. Clients enrolled in either the Educational or Weekend tracks are often concurrently enrolled in outpatient treatment and this track is also ideal for those wishing to step down following completion of primary care.

In Summary

The range of residential programs available at Outside In are tailored to meet the specific needs of both adolescents and adults. Both part- and full-time treatment tracks are available, with unique offerings that combine both traditional, evidence-based treatment methods with intensive life-skills programming. Those wishing to immerse themselves in a supportive recovery environment that has a flexible range of options will find Outside In a good fit.
