Outback Therapeutic Expeditions Review
Outback Therapeutic Expeditions is a therapeutic wilderness facility located 30 minutes south of Salt Lake City, Utah in the city of Lehi. It specializes in the care of adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders, as well as individuals with surface addiction like gaming and the Internet. Founded in 2001, Outback Therapeutic Expeditions seeks to find and heal the root causes of conditions rather than simply treating symptoms. As such, the facility promotes a strengths-based model of care that integrates therapy, life skills and academics. While the 12-step recovery model is not a component of the curriculum, medication management is available. The program was praised on Dr. Phil as well as 20/20.
Accommodations and Food
Located between the Sheeprock and Simpson Mountains, Outback Therapeutic Expeditions is situated on 900 square miles of beautiful, rugged landscapes. Removed from the chaos of distractions and triggers, Outback provides an environment and a culture ideal for self-reflection and growth.
Clients live in small groups and spend as many as five days a week hiking and camping. The students prepare their own meals, set up and take down camp sites, and learn a variety of wilderness survival skills. Meals are plain but nutritious, with options available for individuals with dietary restrictions and allergies.
Treatment and Staff
Before starting at Outback, clients first undergo a comprehensive intake evaluation that includes a medical and psychological history as well as a complete account of addiction. The team then customizes a personalized care plan based off the results. While the length of stay varies depending on the specific needs of the individual, most clients stay between seven and nine weeks.
The facility encourages individuals to examine the unhealthy patterns in their life while also maintaining a focus on their positive qualities. This strengths-based approach is the best method for long-term success. The outdoors serve as a “hands-on classroom” that forces clients to learn new skills and overcome challenges. Students build real confidence while deepening their connection to themselves, others and nature.
While clients spend most of their time on the trail, the program reserves two days a weeks for therapy. Clients engage in individual therapy and group therapy as well as gender-specific groups. While in the field, instructors facilitate group discussions every evening. Clients spend much of their free time focusing on academic requirements, journaling and touching base with family. In addition, the facility incorporates a robust academic curriculum that includes classes in health, physical education and art. Before completing treatment, clients go through a week-long high-adventure program that includes rock climbing, rappelling and a ropes course.
The Outback team has a physician, paramedic, field instructors, marriage and family therapists, LSWs and mental health counselors. As previously mentioned, medical services are available as is medication management.
Outback Therapeutic Expeditions believes that family involvement is a key component to the success of a sustainable recovery. As a result, the facility keeps families informed of their child’s progress. In addition, parents take part in seminars and coursework, and there is an option for a three-day family adventure.
Outback does not accept insurance, though the facility does direct parents on the best way to receive reimbursement.
Outback Therapeutic Expeditions is a unique treatment program that incorporates academics, therapy and life skills into a wilderness survival curriculum. Situated in the scenic, rocky surrounding of north central Utah, the facility provides an ideal setting for individuals recovering from addiction. It empowers clients to not only learn new skills but also to make positive changes in their lives. For anyone seeking an effective treatment program, this rehab offers a unique and powerful approach.
