Located in Maberly in Ontario, Canada, Ottowa Maberly is a rehab facility with residential treatment programs for adults struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. The program specializes in helping clients who are chronic relapsers and provides individualized care to both men and women. Programs are available in 30, 60 and 90-day varieties.
Accommodations and Food
All told, the facility is a private residential-style lakefront home with 90 grassy acres and eight shared bedrooms kept separate by gender. Each of the bedrooms comes with full beds, dressers, natural light, shared closet space and basic decorations. In addition to the rooms, the rest of the facility looks like any other cottage-style home with common living areas, outdoor porches, therapy rooms, TV rooms, a weight room and a fully-equipped kitchen. Throughout their stay, residents are provided three meals a day by a team of on-staff chefs.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all participants must go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff determine their needs. While on-site detox services are not available, those in need can get referrals to nearby partner facilities in Gananoque and Limehouse, Ontario whenever necessary. Once accepted, residents begin attending both group and individual therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Unlike many recovery programs, Ottawa Maberly does not focus primarily on complete abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Instead, it focuses on teaching clients how to manage and confront triggers to change their behavior.
In addition to the clinical approaches, the facility also includes groups teaching residents life skills, health and wellness practices, employment skills and other important issues. Participants also sometimes attend day trips and frequently get outside to exercise, go kayaking and other activities. While 12-step participation may be encouraged in some cases, it is not always required.
The staff at Ottawa Maberly consists of LADCs, LPCs and additional state-certified addiction counselors.
As mentioned, the organization provides plenty of recreational opportunities for residents including local day trips and activities on the lake in the backyard. Because the program is aimed specifically at chronic relapsers, treatment is somewhat of a cross between a standard residential program and a sober living as well, with the goal of transitioning clients back into normal life. Once they complete a primary care regimen, staff members can also help residents develop step-down aftercare and discharge plans as well.
In all, Ottawa Maberly is a well-rounded residential program that offers flexible lengths of stay and an all-encompassing recovery approach. Treatment includes evidence-based therapy with both group and individual counseling as well as plenty of physical activity and life skills throughout the day. While those in need of more intensive medical or psychiatric supervision may need to seek help elsewhere, Ottawa Maberly remains a strong resource for those in the area.
