OttaganRecoveryOutpatientThe Basics

Founded in 1972, Ottagan Addictions Recovery (OAR) offers outpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs in central Michigan. There are two locations for drug and alcohol treatment, one in Grand Haven and the other in Holland. As a nonprofit facility, Ottagan strives to make affordable care available to all. Treatment is rooted in therapy and the 12 steps are introduced.

Treatment and Staff

Clients are given a detailed evaluation before starting treatment. This includes drug and alcohol history, as well as psychological history. Treatment is individualized—the staff recognizes that not all clients benefit from the same treatment. Dual diagnosis treatment is only available therapeutically—there is no psychiatrist on staff. Detox is not offered.

Once the individualized treatment plan is mapped out, clients attend individual and group therapy. Individual therapy occurs on as-needed basis and includes evidence-based modalities such as CBT. Group therapy covers addiction education, relapse prevention, coping skills, 12-step work, stress and anger management.

During group, clients are introduced to the 12 steps. While they are encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings on their time, it is not a requirement.

The six-week intensive outpatient program meets for three hours, three times a week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. After this, clients may step-down to the regular outpatient program, which meets once a week for one and a half hours.

Staff members consist of LADCs and licensed social workers. There are approximately seven staff members for each client in the program.

Extras

OAR offers residential treatment at two gender-specific houses in Holland—the Chester A. Ray Center for men and the Harbor House for women.

A family support program consisting of specialized workshops is held regularly. Presentations include “Addiction Myths,” “Demystifying Treatment” and “Family and Addiction.”

Interventions to help get clients into treatment are available.

OAR offers alcohol highway safety classes, attorney- and employer- requested assessments, driver’s license assessments and a victim-survivor impact panel.

In Summary

OAR focuses on traditional talk therapy as the main way to deal with substance abuse. While the 12 steps are covered, it is not the main focus of treatment. Clients who do well in a relaxed, therapeutic environment will find this program helpful.
