Orchid Recovery CenterOrchid Recovery Review

For those looking for a progressive, women-only treatment facility in South Florida, Orchid Recovery Center offers a blend of traditional and non-traditional healing modalities to treat substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Based on the insights of Dr. Karen Dodge, an addiction treatment specialist, Orchid addresses the underlying issues that are specific to women dealing with alcohol and drug addiction. According to Dr. Dodge’s “relational growth” treatment model, the healing process for women struggling with substance abuse is accelerated in a small, women-only community. By building a solid, safe social network, clients can begin to feel nurtured and supported as they work through low self-esteem, trauma, depression and lack of life skills.

Accommodations and Food

The 32-bed Orchid Recovery Center is split into two- and four-person cottages, each of which mimics a small home, with twin beds for sleeping, a shared bathroom, eat-in kitchen and living room. The cottages each have a television that can be watched during free time, but private electronics are not allowed. The outside area includes lots of plant life and seating meant for reading and relaxing. Smoking is allowed outdoors during breaks.

With lots of bright colors and Buddha heads galore, clients will feel like they are living in a retreat center rather then a hospital. The rest of the facility is just a short walk from the cottages and features bright group rooms, fountains and lots of cozy seating.

When it comes to food, Orchid Recovery Center provides a hands-on learning experience. From preparing meals to knowing what ingredients provide optimum nutrition and energy to understanding the healing properties of certain foods, women are given a comprehensive education in living a nutritionally sound life, both during and after treatment. Clients are taken on supervised trips to the grocery store to pick out ingredients for the upcoming week and prepare three meals a day with their housemates in the cottage kitchens. Through the shared preparation of meals, the women can learn from each other as well as bond over food.

Treatment and Staff

Orchid Recovery Center aims to provide a little bit of everything when it comes to healing. On-site, medically supervised detox is available at the start of treatment for no additional cost. From there, clients follow a 30- to 120-day program that includes individual therapy, group therapy, art therapy, family therapy, life skills therapy, healing sound therapy, breathwork, yoga, acupuncture, massage, fitness, family of origin treatment and psychodrama. Clients meet with an individual Master’s-level therapist several times a week to address the underlying issues of their substance abuse as well as any co-occurring mental health issues.

Group work involves CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and addresses issues such as relapse prevention, codependency, life skills, trauma, self-esteem, processing and family dynamics.

The all-female staff at Orchid Recovery Center includes a medical director, psychiatrist, Master’s level therapists, substance abuse counselors and a variety of outside practitioners. All staff members have extensive experience in their field and specialize in working with women.

A typical day at Orchid Recovery Center begins with a 6:30 am wake up call followed by meds from 6:30 am to 7:30 am. A room inspection goes from 8 am to 8:30 am and is followed by a meditation and goals group from 8:30 am to 9 am. Clients attend acupuncture from 9 am to 10 am and then group therapy from 10 am to 12 pm. Lunch and massage time goes from 12 pm to 2 pm followed by another group activity from 2 pm to 3pm. From 3 pm to 5 pm, clients can choose between off-site gym visits or on-site physical fitness classes such as yoga or bodylastics. Dinner and free time goes from 5 pm to 6:30 pm followed by meds from 5:30 pm to 6 pm. An on-site 12-step meeting from 7 pm to 8:30 pm is followed by a discussion on goals and gratitude from 8:30 pm to 9 pm. Clients finish up the day with free time until lights out at 11 pm.

Extras

Treatment at Orchid Recovery Center is all about the holistic extras. From off-site daily yoga classes to acupuncture to chiropractic services to herbalist treatments to sound baths to hormone therapy, the women receive healing for the body, mind and spirit at no additional cost.

While the facility does offer many on-site recreational amenities, the clients are taken to an off-site yoga studio, pool and gym. Weekend outings also allow clients to catch a movie, run errands and walk on the beach.

The family program operates on a monthly basis, inviting family members into the facility to participate in group therapy, educational lectures and individual therapy. Family dynamics can also be strengthened through visitation time over the weekends.

In Summary

Orchid Recovery Center provides a safe and supportive environment for women who are looking to truly heal from their problems. With an extensive amount of holistic healing options, 12-step exposure and lots of preparation for real life situations, Orchid Recovery Center teaches women how to live a sober lifestyle both in and outside the walls of treatment.
