Orchard Place Youth and Substance Services

OrchardPlaceReviewThe Basics

Orchard Place Youth and Substance Services offers an Intensive Outpatient (IOP) treatment program for drug and alcohol abuse to children and adolescents under the age of 18 in Des Moines, Iowa. Founded in 1886 as the Home for the Friendless Children after a three-day-old baby boy was abandoned in front of a distinguished family’s home, the facility was the first orphanage in Des Moines. Later it would be named the Des Moines Children’s Home, and has evolved over time into a program that has helped over 9,000 children in Iowa.

The OP organization today is comprised of four different divisions, including a behavioral health center and a residential psychiatric treatment facility. The campus offers IOP substance abuse treatment, and includes treatment for dual diagnosis. Detox is not offered.

Treatment and Staff

Clients are given a thorough assessment—which includes a psychological and psychiatric evaluation, as well as a CRAFFT screening (a tool used specifically to measure adolescent substance abuse)—when they arrive for treatment. A targeted treatment plan is developed from this evaluation.

The IOP program is designed to give adolescents structure over a 16-week period. The outpatient program is based on the Matrix Model, which includes group therapy in the form of CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), addiction education and relapse prevention. Though AA and NA meetings are not held on site, the facility does host Al Anon meetings. Individual therapy is also a part of treatment, and a strong emphasis is placed on reinforcing the importance of constructive substance-free activities.

Adolescents with dual diagnosis are evaluated by a psychiatrist. These clients follow up with the doctor regularly for medication management, as well as to track progress to ensure clients are stabilized. In addition, those with dual diagnoses address mental health issues and gain an understanding of their condition through education with licensed psychologists during individual sessions.

12-step programs are not a part of the groups at Orchard Place, but they are presented as an option for continuing care.

Staff members include LSWs. LADCs specializing in youth addiction, youth psychologists and psychiatrists.

Orchard Place partners with Bridging the Gap, an organization that assists with aftercare planning and discharge in addition to helping to connect clients with AA groups in the community.

“The Vigilant Choices,” a group that helps motivate youth through fun and engaging activities, is held bi-weekly with the purpose of instilling strong decision-making skills in young people. Orchard Place also utilizes “Rock in Prevention,” which is an interactive musical presentation that addresses topics such as bullying and resisting drug use.

In Summary

For anyone with a child needing substance abuse treatment in Des Moines Iowa, Orchard Place is great choice. With a therapy-based treatment model and a built-in peer-based support network, youth are well-served.
